I have a well and I'd like to add a spigot across the yard connecting to the well via underground piping.
Is a hydrant the best option? Are there good options for below ground faucets? Are there better hydrants than the Chinese ones at the big box stores?
BTW, I'm in central Alabama and our frost line is about 12 inches below ground.

I have two of those chinese ones from Home Depot and they work well. No issues. And yes, if you're mounting the faucet away from a structure, this is what you want. I'd personally set a post of some sort next to it. If you can shake the farm spigot, you can break it from the PVC below the ground relatively easy. Learned that the hard way.

Funny coincidence….I was jut]st thinking about installing a couple of these and posted a thread about a week ago. I got good feedback on them and plan to buy some shortly.

The only question I have is how you transition from PVC to steel. I can’t find any such thing as a steel-PVC transition fitting.

By PVC to steel, you mean galvanized pipe? If so, Teflon the male threads on the bottom of that hose spigot and spin and attach a galvanized 90. Don’t forget to use Megalok sealant. Out of the 90 use a PVC threaded male adapter. Use primer and glue on the male and galvanized 90 and tighten up with channel locks.

I'm considering running PEX tubing instead of PVC.

I have put in two of these "yard hydrants" in north AL, one at my place and one at my aunt's house. Her hydrant froze and burst twice, after the second time I went with one of these. Bought from Home Depot, installed after watching a few videos and talking to a plumber friend. I like my aunt's so much that I put one in at our place.

Just don't skip the rock in the bottom of the hole to both help the water drain off of the valve and to sturdy it up a bit. Also, you have to disconnect the hose for it to drain correctly and not have a chance of freezing. As long as you do that, they're great.

Thanks! That gives me a starting point.

Funny you have this thread because just today I had to install one down in grand lake for a business. It was female threads at the bottom so I screwed in a brass pro press male adapter and pressed in some black PE pipe with a stiffener to complete the job

Interesting…so there is more than one way to do it.
