Add Small Air Register to 1/2 Bath
Posted on 10/10/21 at 3:49 pm

My 1/2 bath is right by my garage and gets very stuffy, not to mention the stagnant air and dust on a lot of stuff. I’d like to get a little bit of air circulation but nothing major.
Should I tee in a small line from an existing duct or just run a new one from the plenum?
I do a lot of DIY home improvement but don’t mess with HVAC ducting a lot so any advice is appreciated.
TIA

5 inch duct off end of plenum close damper half way

This way is much easier than tearing existing duct apart, adding a wye to take a smaller line off an existing run and then having to re-insulate that area.
Not sure what was used for your current duct work. Is it real metal Joval pipe wrapped with insulation or that accordion style flex-duct that comes pre-wrapped?
If you want to go with a quick run, just use some of that flex-duct with the proper starting collar off the plenum and a ceiling box to run to and hook up your grill.

That sounds about right considering a 1/2 bath (maybe 30 sq ft?) and 1 cfm air flow per sq ft guideline.

Thanks for all the info and the chart. I was even going to grab all the gear from Coburn’s.
So I’ll need:
5” collar (for tapping into plenum)
25’ flex duct
5” circular ceiling duct
5” air register cover
Did I miss anything or make a mistake? The transition from duct to the register box always confuses me since there are so many different types. Any info is appreciated.

What is your supply plenum made of? If it's a metal one, you will need a starting collar for a metal plenum as opposed to one for a fiberboard plenum.
Also, pick up some duct tape to secure all joints where the flex duct meets the metal of the starting collar and on the ceiling box the grill screws to.
I don't know about circular ceiling duct. Most all applications now are square or rectangular with grills to match the opening facing the area being air conditioned.
You may get a ceiling register in the 6 x 8 inch configuration with a 5 in. round collar on top and need a 6 x 8 inch grill.
The folks at the parts place should guide you as to what you need to do a good job.
ETA: Grills come in different configurations as far as air distribution. There are 1, 2, 3 and 4 way grills and which one you will use will usually depend on where the grill is located in the ceiling and how you want the air distributed in the area.

I’d buy both mastic tape and small tub of paint on mastic (as opposed to “traditional” duct tape) to seal your joints - buy cheap throw away brushes to paint it on. I’d also get a collar with a damper that will allow you to adjust air flow through the duct. I’m sure the people at Colburns can tell you what else you need.
A/C Supply Inc LINK, near Friendly Honda on Airline, should also have what you need if Colburns doesn’t. They are only several miles from each other . A/C Supply won’t sell electrical, etc. supplies to non-licensed techs but they will sell duct, mastic, to DYIers - I bought some from them a couple months ago.
Stretch your flex duct tight, avoiding ups/downs, sharp bends, to best of your ability to maximize air flow.

Use aluminum tape
Not duct tape
Not duct tape

Thanks to everyone for the help. Coburn’s was able to give me everything I needed for under $100. It was pretty easy.
One question though - I got 25ft of 5” insulated flex duct and it was barely able to make it from the plenum to the register. So right now it’s all hooked up and functional but there is some tension on the duct.
Is there any way I could get a very small extension for the flex duct? I only see them available in 25 or 50 foot lengths and I only need about 1 extra foot and to join them somehow. shite, even an extra inch would be all I need
. It is so damn close!

You’ll need mastic and sheet metal screws(assuming the plenum is sheet metal) for the collar at the plenum and zip ties for the flex duct at the collar and the register.

Honestly, I’d remove the 25’ and use the 50’ and cut it down. Tension isn’t bad for the for the duct per se but all the connections will be strained and if you have bends or turns it could decrease your cfm’s and increase static pressure.

Can you attach a 90 degree 5 inch duct elbow to the hvac register boot which you can then attach your flex duct to? Something like this LINK. That might give you an additional several inches + to relieve some stress on the flex duct though a good stretched duct is good for air flow, but I think I’m understanding your concern it might be stretched to tight.
Just be aware if you do something like this the bare aluminum HVAC duct extension will need to wrapped with duct insulation.

That’s the first thing I thought when I saw that part. That would probably give me the extra distance without overstressing the tension in the flex duct. I may give that a shot and I appreciate the suggestion.

You can buy a small bag of R-8 duct insulation wrap at HD for $10 or so - I bought a bag a couple months ago for a similar purpose - just remember any exposed uninsulated HVAC metal duct in the attic with cold air passing through it is going to sweat and drip water - you don’t want to be repainting water spots on the ceiling of your 1/2 bath.

That’s exactly what I did. I bought 2 5” elbows and used plenty of foil tape and insulated duct wrap. That gave me the extra slack I needed to have the duct extended nicely but without the excess tension.
Thanks for the help.
