Upstairs thermostat went completely dead. As I was removing the old I checked for voltage on "C" which is 24 volts and nothing. Went ahead and replaced it to match the Honeywell digital we have downstairs. Of course it didn't work with no power coming to it. Called an AC company out.

AC company said board was fried and it took 5 days for them to come back with new board. Guy just left and said we have an electrical problem. Said he is only getting 64 volts to the unit in the attic. Thinks we have a broken wire or a bad breaker that is not providing 110 volts. Very skeptical on this.

Anyone have any thoughts or should I just get an electrical company out here to troubleshoot?

You might have a blown fuse on the unit. Take off the cover where the circuit panel is and see if there is a inline fuse and if it's blown. I blew one changing a thermostat and not killing power first

Okay, I pulled cover off the outside unit and don't see a blown fuse or a reset. Assume you are talking about the attic unit?

Your indoor/attic unit will run on 110 and there will be an outlet for it.

Test that outlet and see what it is putting out and narrow it down from there.

That sounds like a sound diagnosis.

What did he suggest?

Okay so the 2 units in the attic are wired to side by side switches. Unit that is running shows 122.85 volts. Unit that is not running shows 123 volts coming to switch. I flipped switch on and it shows 123 volts after switch.

Definitely not a bad breaker or a broken wire coming from the breaker box.

Now check the plug wire that runs into the unit.

He said we need to call an electrician. Of course this is the same guy that diagnosed a bad circuit board but didn't spot the low voltage issue he discovered today. Still not sure how he diagnosed low voltage.

Wouldn't surprise me if the old circuit board was just fine and he was just changing parts.

Will follow the wires from the switch into the unit. Assume they will be attached to terminals. Check voltage at this spot to determine a fault in wire from switch to unit? Is this correct?

Yep, most likely it’s something easy like a blown fuse and a cheap part.

Sounds like the guy didn’t know what he was doing and like you said, changing parts without diagnosing the issue.

Half of my sprinkler system isn’t working right now.

Pretty certain the common wire to the valves is messed up somewhere. I just really don’t feel like hunting it down in this heat, like you said. Although outside is much different that the attic.

Voltage at unit. Don't see any blown fuses. Connections look good.

If he did in fact change the board out then I wonder if it could be the fan?

Is the unit outside running?

Welp... after checking voltage I reconnected wires. As I was tightening the wire nut the fan came on and the gas heater came on for 5-10 seconds and shut down. Came down and themostat now has power and is working. AC is cooling. I guess it needed a passive reset of some kind.

Appreciate the assistance my good man.

Going to get a big glass of cold tea, cool down, and get on the phone with the AC company. They got an arse chewing coming.

Something similar happened to me last week when I changed a capacitor. Needed to rest a bit first I guess.

Looks like you found a loose connection which may have caused a low voltage reading.

Glad you're going again and have tea to cool down.

In my experience, AC technicians have gotten very poor at their job but all think they’re great. Problem I have with companies is they do t always send the experienced techs. So I keep having to change companies or figure it out myself like you did.
