Planted sweet corn too

This year I'll trade you some corn for onions. Mine never bulbed out.

I am planting this weekend. All the plants have been hardened off and are ready to roll.

They still have time to bulb out. If in 3-4 weeks they still aren’t, then it ain’t happening.

Any reason not to mulch/top vegetable garden with leaves?
I have access to so many leaves.

It’s time. Hopefully able to between showers on Saturday and the projected temp stays at 40 or above next week.

I’m jealous. I pulled 5 bags of live oak leaves out of someone’s trash just today. As someone who grew up with about 20 trees including 6 giant sycamores, I appreciate their effort to collect and bag them. So maybe not completely jealous…
I’ll spread the leaves between rows to start with. Once established I’ll use pine needles and a lighter layer of leaves around the bases of the plants.
ETA: maybe it depends on the type of leaves? I’m not aware, if all leaves are created equal. Maybe someone else is.

Chopped leaves are a great mulch, and I use them all the time along with grass clippings. Oak leaves however have lots of tannins and take a long time to break down. I try to use them in my pathways and around the edges of the garden but not on the beds themselves.

Stepped away from planting food for awhile but walked around the yard today and took a few good spring garden pics.

Spring is pretty. But also scary. Pulled some weeds, threw them in the trash, then saw this spiny baw hanging out.

Beautiful!
I finally got my smart timer all set up.
I’m gonna hold off on planting for a little longer. Temps are trending lower for Tuesday morning. Now at 39. Gonna play it safe and wait.

We’re projected a low of 39 now. Tomatoes and peppers are going in tomorrow. Reloaded a half row with topsoil and mushroom compost for planting green beans tomorrow. Things are escalating quickly here.

As long as it doesn’t go any lower I may still plant this weekend. The good news is it’s supposed to be cloudy overnight Monday/Tuesday morning, which will help prevent frost. That would be my only concern.

I just realized that's a Gulf Fritillary caterpillar. Beautiful butterflies.

Good to know, thanks!

The spikes do look a bit formidable, but if you gently touch them, you will find that they are actually soft to the touch. Their appearance is a good defense mechanism, as their potential prey might be leery of the orange coloring and dangerous looking spikes.
I planted a bunch of dill out in the garden, so hope to see some swallowtail caterpillars later. Hopefully I planted enough to share between them and our pickle jars.

How do you manage dill? I have 4-5 seedlings.

Just let it grow like most other herbs. Clip off sprigs as you need them. The heat and swallowtails will get it eventually.

Beat the rain today for 5 hrs of weeding and bed prep. Started thundering as I was packing my stuff up. Was going to plant the tomatoes but double checked and saw the chance for hail today and tomorrow. My words earlier of “I didn’t baby these things for 2.5 months to rush them into the ground” were echoing to me.
Edit: hail storm went just to the north and hammered folks with broken windows and windshields on vehicles.
