Would it be a technical nightmare to have a way to sort posts in a thread?

I am not technically inclined but I imagine the coding or whatever the frick it is needs to be done would be extremely difficult, so I know this probably won't happen. But would it be remotely feasible to have a way to sort a thread's responses by upvotes?
Similar to how when major stories break, you bring in the "top replies" feature so users can quickly off the bat see the relevant posts to get the info they need. In a similar fashion, I think it'd be cool if I could click a thread and then sort by upvotes. It seems like the most helpful/funniest/important/etc posts would then get sorted to the top. Maybe just introduce a button to toggle between sorted by upvotes and just regular mode.
Any feedback here?
eta: No, this has nothing to do with reddit. What made me think of this was clicking on a thread that was like 8 pages and knowing that there were probably some really funny responses but not wanting to read through 8 pages to find the best ones.

ETA but that's exactly how Reddit works.

I get on reddit maybe once every 3 months, I don't even have a name there. I just threw the ETA in there because I know that some people (mostly OT people, what a shock) always try to mention reddit anytime something is posted from there. When the uv/dv first started I remember everyone all up in arms about this site "trying to be reddit".
I see what you're saying, I was just trying to point out this doesnt' really ahve anything at all to do with reddit, it was just something that would be convenient for users.

FWIW I prefer how the site already is as it is chronological. If you could choose one or the other is be alright with that.

I'd much rather the "new" flag to stay there until I've clicked the thread.

It's easy without you're wacky idea.

you just want to read a bunch of punchlines with no set up or context?
