Because the kind of people that fall for this thing are the simple minded people of the south who are coming here to talk about football and have no idea what the OT is.
Yes, the OT can be a cesspool at times, but it's filled with a lot of people who have the intelligence to know when an unfunny joke has worn it's welcome.

It makes it more difficult to identify alters. Introduction threads are theirs, these legit new posters doing so fricks up perception and everyone thinks Alters are running amuck. The admin team then spends hours needlessly scanning IPs looking for duplicates.
