How to remove the background from an image to use as an electronic signature

I've Googled and tried Gimp but damned if I can't seem to get it right. Anyone have plain Engrish directions to do this?

Is the background one solid color that you just want to be transparent? If so, you can select and delete it in gimp and save as a PNG or GIF with transparency/alpha channel. If you save as a JPG, it's just not going to work because they don't have an alpha channel.

I believe he needs to post it so that we can be certain whether it is or isn't, however.
I mean, one wouldn't want to make such a determination in haste or anything.

I'm not sure about gimp, but I assume it's similar.
In photoshop, you can use the magic wand tool to create a clipping mask around just the signature. Move that to a new layer and turn off the background.
The key is in the file type. You'd have to save it as a .png (or other format that supports transparency) as opposed to .jpg (which doesn't).

i think it's his name, which is why he doesn't want to post/email it.
Not sure why Thurman Murman, III is so embarrassed of his name.
