only way this works is if you only get a message if the person responded directly to you in a thread

Personally, I like when anyone adds to a discussion, but I could see this to try and keep it from getting too many notifications.

When I start threads they sometimes go 200 pages and people reply to my witty posts in existing threads. Getting several thousand notifications a day would be very annoying.
Plus it encourages not reading the board and just checking to see if anyone responded to your troll.
Just put a setting where you can turn notifications on or off.

I post on another board where you get notified if someone quotes you or mentions you (@username). It took a while to get used to but it's pretty nice.
