Reading the book “What Doesn’t Kill Us” by Scott Carney now, he brings a lot of good science and sites several studies done to kinda confirm everything Hof preaches. I was very skeptical at first, but this book has me believing. I’ve been doing his breathing technique for a month or so now and started the cold exposure until my 20 min ice bath (WAYYY TO LONG) got me sick, but think I’m gonna do a 3 min round in a pool today. Anybody tried his stuff or have an opinion on him?

I listened to his podcast with Mark Devine on “unbeatable mind” and that it was very interesting.

Did cold baths back in the summer but it got kinda hard when temps started dropping outside.

I also got that book but didn’t care for it bc he kept talking about evolution and shite. Anyway, I do think his methods work.

I've tried it. There is something to the cold that after the rush is relaxing. I've even purchased a cold vest to chill myself while reading. I go back and forth on and off it. I've never slept more like a rock.

The story about the pilgrims and Samoset is really interesting. I like to look for more stories throughout history of cold adaptation.

What’s the cliffs on this wim hof method? I’ve been reading about ice baths and cryo therapy but haven’t heard of Wim Hof

I mean it’s a shite ton to give cliffs on, but it’s basically the most realistic instance of legit bio hacking I’ve ever come across. He has a power breathing method where you super charge your body with oxygen and then master your breath holds, Ive gotten up to 3:15 on the breath holds. Then there’s a huge cold immersion component and the ultimate goal/result to be able to consciously control your autonomic nervous system. Wim Hof has gotten so good at it he controls his own immune system and can fend off any virus/ infection that attempts to enter his body. The Joe Rogan Experience #712, the first one Wim Hof does with him, does a good job of explaining most of it, but the book does a much, much greater job of explaining all the details and citing all the research and studies. The main idea is that primitive man was built to endure so much more than current, comfortable, technologically spoiled man can produce.

This is no slight on Keto, but his method of harvesting brown antipose tissue in the body to use it burn fat as your primary fuel source is much healthier, natural, and sustainable long term than the Keto method of simply starving your body of carbs and only having fat as your fuel option.

Wim is pushing unknown boundaries. I find it fascinating. However, good luck pushing people giving up the cozy warmth. As the struggle is just as hard as them giving up carbs... And I say that as someone who tries embracing the cold.

He had some data of actually curing diseases (especially depression/anxiety) through his methods. One of the universities out in Sweden? Is actually beginning to really study this more in depth.

I remember him talking about being hooked up on the brain scan while he was undergoing his breathing control and his brain showed the same response as it would on a major dose of opiates. He could essentially purposefully flood his system with its on endorphins.

Yeah, he’s mastered those Autonomic Nervous System responses better than we will ever be able to hope to just bc it’s basically his life’s work. But according to Scott Carney in the book and a bunch of other Hof disciples there are some more basic functions that we can master within a few months. I know this is gonna sound cheesy, but the breathing and meditation has actually gotten me to where I can “go” a lot longer in bed. I’m really interested in harvesting the BAT though for the sake of changing my metabolism to a point where it feeds more off of white fat at a lower heart rate. As an endurance athlete even small incremental changes in that department make a big difference on both game day performance and comfort of training.

Just signed up for the prelim breathing. Cold therapy next.

I can handle any kind of cold when I am ready. We will see about am showers, though.

I've never heard anything about harvesting brown adipose tissue. It is about adding a layer or thicker layer of brown adipose tissue to the body creating more warmth.

So I don't know how cold it is where you are but the best part about freezing cold am showers in the winter is that when you go outside it doesn't really feel cold.

One of the big examples of his method was using his followers, not actually him, to beat the test where they inject you with a pseudo disease. Nearly everyone destroyed the disease with quickness by raising their adrenaline (if not mistaken). I can't even find the video of the study on youtube now, the youtube has been overrun with wim hof stuff in the last year

Not as directly as you’re thinking...
Brown adipose tissue bonds with Mitochondria to use white adipose tissue(regular fat) as a fuel source prior to engaging stored glycogen. So it changes the nature of your body’s metabolism and in the world of endurance athletics this is huge.
