Had two friends invite me and a buddy to do a Spartan Race in October. I've never done one before. I'm in pretty good shape, but I typically focus on the big 3 and not as much on calisthenics (which I assume is better in this kind of event). What are some programs/workouts/youtube channels you baws would recommend to get ready for the race? TIA

That's about what I figured. Let the pain begin

Spartan races are great. I got the double trifecta last year including the trifecta weekend in WV.

Most will tell you it's all about burpees. I never trained that way. I focus on running and grip strength so that I don't fail obstacles and have to do burpees. Pull-ups, dead-hangs, farmer's carry. Lot's of hill work when running.

Bonus: go to your hardware store and buy a garden handle and a yard spike to make a spear to practice with. Nothing worse than 30 burpees over a 5 second easy obstacle. How to build a spartan spear

ETA Bonus #2: Learn the S-hook or J-hook technique for rope climbing. It's not gym class... the rope is muddy.

That makes me feel better. I kill pull-ups and my grip strength is pretty good. I live in a really hilly area, so that shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for all the tips! Will definitely look into the spear and hook techniques

I have two trifectas under my belt and as long as you can run a 5 K you will be fine. I say this b/c there are enough breaks in obstacles where you will be good. I would also recommend body weight work outs.... pull ups, burpees, push ups, etc. Also, the terrain you run the race in affects you too. So if you are running in the hills make sure you prepare for that.

However, with all this said I have witnessed people "walking" over half the race. Don't wear cotton and use Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Have fun and don't do anything reckless that will get you hurt. It's not worth that.

Running is the biggest obstacle and grip strength is huge on most of the tougher obstacles. Which distance are you doing? Also, look up how to throw the spear underhand...it might not look as masculine, but who cares if you aren't doing burpees!

If it's October, I'm guessing the Super in Atlanta. 9-10 miles. It's got some decent elevation changes, but not as severe as some of the mountainous venues.

There's a Beast in Dallas in October as well. I've done both. The course for the Beast can be brutal

Spartan Sprint
It is in Atlanta, but because most of the people in the group are new at this, we are going to do the sprint. I don't want to run before I crawl.

Doing the Dallas beast in October. Is this a tougher beast to finish?

Just did the Utah Super and that was brutal on the mountain.

I’m going for my Trifecta in Tahoe in 6 weeks. I agree with the other experienced people. Practice running hills and stairs. On most courses you’ll be going up and up and up. Get on a stairmaster or run some hills because they’ll kick your arse depending on where you are. May not be as critical if you are doing a Florida sprint.

Grip and Upper body strength is all else what you need. Do dead hangs and pull-ups.

Honestly I barely do any burpees in training. These are the things I focus on. If you are doing a Beast you may need to look into hydration and food strategy else just go for it.

The Dallas Beast is a lot hillier and rockier than you would think. Also weather can be an issue. One year it was in the low 20s at race time and the next time was in the 80s.
