I guess I'm slowly accepting that I'm no spring chicken any more. Friday I just went to work, didn't hit the gym or do any sort of lifting. Saturday morning we hit a nephew's birthday party, then on to my daughter's soccer game. The heaviest thing I carried was a few camping chairs and they were on a strap on my shoulder. Quick lunch at a Mexican place, then back home. Felt fine during all of that time. Don't recall bending over to pick anything up.

I sit down on the couch to watch a little football, and when I go to stand up about 45 minutes later, the lower back felt a little tight. Nothing too bad, just tight. It got worse over the evening, and when I got out of bed yesterday morning I felt like a 90 year old man. I stretched some, used my foam roller, and at different points in the day used either heat or cold on it. And some Aleve. Today I'm a little more functional, but sitting at this desk, if I shift the wrong way it kills me for a few seconds.

Any specific stretches I can do to loosen it up? It is at the base of my back, right above my butt. I can at least bend a little at the waist today. Yesterday was a cluster any time I tried to sit down, stand up, or lie down.

I get that sometimes. I like to stretch my piriformis with the pigeon pose and get the lacrosse ball on it. If I do that often enough, I can lift and be fine.

id rest a week before you started stretching.

Really, rest is your best bet until you feel it is improved.

TENS unit

Foam roller and/or lacrosse/tennis ball

Ice 3-4x/day for 20-30 minutes

Ibuprofen 600-800mg every 8 hours

Light stretching

Game changer. Forgot we had one of these. It is the icy hot version but it is working. It runs for 30 min and cuts off. Did that when I got home and now on round 2. Had to find some 2032 batteries but it is awesome.

Are you sure it's a muscle and not a facet joint or sacroiliac? Those tend to be self-diagnosed as a pulled muscle. If you check some YouTube videos from physical therapists you can find exercises that will help diagnose if it's one of those as well as some routines to rehab it over the next week or so.

How can you tell the difference between a strained muscle or ligament?

Muscle relaxers. Quit white sugar for a few days. Advil. Increase protein. Bengay. Plenty of sleep. Can't stress sleep enough.

I'm fresh out. I used to have some good stuff too. I do have some narcotic stuff leftover from my surgery this past spring, but it hasn't come to that yet. It is much better than yesterday. Sunday was bad, Monday was better, Tuesday was absolutely horrible. Today I have a little more range of movement before the pain starts. I used the TENS unit again this morning while making coffee and ironing clothes. Going to hit it again tonight as it really seemed to help.

People who rest too much end up having chronic pain. Keep moving.
