I have been doing CrossFit for nearly a year now. Over the last couple months I have been experiencing some pain in my right knee after workouts. It also seems to bother me when I do alot of driving (I guess the motion of working the gas and brake pedals aggravates it).

Over the last few weeks I have been taking it much easier on the working out and taking anti inflammatory pills. Last week I tried going to a CF class and the pain was still there like I hadn't even taken a break.

I've done more reading online and plan to start icing it every day as well as continuing to stay off of it and continuing the meds.

Has anyone here been through this before? Any advice on how to get this healed up? Any advice to keep it from happening again (shoe choice, etc)? I'm eager to get this thing healed up so I can start working out normally again.

Does your knee seem to catch while bending? I had that happen and it ended up being cartilage that was pinched between the joint. Went to the doctor and he gave me super high strength anti-inflammatory pills and it popped right back in place.

It’s probably the beginning of rhabdomyolysis.

Patella tendinitis (or possibly tendonosis) requires loading it to help heal.

Iso holds on a knee extension machine with moderate weight.

30 secs on, 1 min off for 4-5x per session at least 2x per day. Since we aren’t setting in a gym all day, buy a kettle bell and hook it over your foot for similar holds at the office.

Another: Stand on a wedge (downward angle) and squat with your knees extended over your feet for similar 30-60 sec holds with 1 min breaks for 4-5x.

Finally, stretching: Hamstrings, Quads and Calves.

I’ve been battling it in my left knee for a while.

Interesting, wouldn't have thought but will try that for sure. I'm also thinking about buying one of those knee wraps that has an ice pack in it that I can stick in the freezer at the office and wear periodically throughout the day.

Our gym has a PT facility attached to it. New therapy for tendinitis is to load it.

Ice just masks the symptoms temporarily.

This is absolutely ridiculous and untrue. Cartilage dose not pop back into place from a high strength anti-inflammatory. The doc prescribed you a high does ibuprofen(aka 4 regular ibuprofen pills in one) = 800mg or a meloxicam/Celebrex. Nor does it pop back into place with anything.

Anyhow, the post about loading th tendon is the key. Ice is not bad, it’s great for pain relief. But it won’t help without the exercise.

So Eccentrics/Controlled Loading is where it’s at as the poster above recommended.

For the record, I’m a PT.
