even athletes who do keto still consume well over 100g of carbs a day bc their body won't come out of ketosis

Just a bystander here, but I think this would qualify them to still be on keto if they were still in ketosis correct?

OK, then tilt to protein (which is what I would recommend anyway.)

but not optimal for performance
Whether or not it is "optimal", the OP gave no indication that he is some kind of hardcore performance nut. Yet the advice you gave him is evidently as if he is. Keto is absolutely long-term sustainable in terms of any reasonable goals he has voiced.

I'm responding exactly to what you said:

quote:

Keto is a good thing to cycle through but just isn't long term sustainable if you are looking for size and performance.

That is a false statement. Perhaps if you had said something like: "If you are looking for serious/extreme size and performance, then perhaps there are some methods/approaches that are even better than keto."

But you didn't. You said it was "absolutely long-term unsustainable". Which, of course, is just a silly assertion.

How overweight are you at 25-30 lbs over in terms of percentage? If it was like me which was about 25% over my ideal weight, I was eating at a caloric deficit to lose about 1 lb per week and I was hitting it on the nose without looking at macros. The results in the mirror and comparing to old pictures showed that most of it was body fat too.

Once I got to about 10% over weight, I found it much harder to lose fat and I started feeling like shite while trying to maintain a deficit. I started exercising 3-4 days per week and increased my calories by about 10% to 15% daily and I'm feeling better and starting to lose weight again.

All the posters that are saying weight loss is calories are 100% correct, but the lower your body fat % becomes, the more your body tries to hold on to the fat and grab energy from other sources, that's when you need to focus on optimizing your diet.
