My son had surgery on a leg and isn’t going to be playing any sports this year. He’s 15 and wanting to start lifting weights. Anyone have a workout plan with specific types of lifts he could start doing. It’ll be strictly upper body for a couple more weeks and then light stuff with his lower half. Thanks

As he gets deeper into recovery, consider training the other leg independently. There is some really cool research out there about training a healthy limb and impact to the other.

He’s in a boot now. Are you suggesting to train the good leg while waiting for recovery on the injured one?

Yes. I suggest step-ups as an option

Good stuff. You don’t think step ups, being in a boot, would be too strenuous?

If it is, then stick to leg extensions and such. But he might be able to do low step ups that are essentially touch-and-go on the booted leg.

For the bulk of your OP, he can use this time to really develop upper body, and almost any program would work.

Swimming is the best low impact training. Full body work out, without the weight on his leg.

Yeah, I’m just trying to keep him active and he needs to get stronger for high school. It’s been years since I’ve been in the gym and plan on doing it with him. When I worked out, my goal was to get bigger… not really worried about that with him. Just strength

Don’t do anything that would increase the risk of falling or needing to use the bad leg to prevent a fall while in a boot. If any leg training then leg press machine would probably be a reasonable place to start
