I started following a low glycemic diet that my doctor provided to me (he created a list of foods I can eat, list of foods to avoid and a list of foods to eat in limited amounts) in a Word document.

I started on 1/23 and since then I have lost 9 lbs. without doing any exercise. I never realized up until now how much I actually enjoyed (and ate) breads and pasta.

I plan to start an exercise regimen very soon and will continue following my doctor's guidance.

I haven't tracked anything, but I can safely say that I have less than 10 to 12g carbs per day and sometimes none. I use olive oil a lot and drink water exclusively.

I realize this will be a lifestyle change -- my question is -- I do miss a sweet or two (haven't had any since I started) -- and will continue on this path until I get to where I want to get -- but how and when do people "cheat?". And once you cheat, how to you make up for it again?

Is there such a thing as -- and this is just a made up example -- stay strict for 10 days and cheat for 1 -- or something to that effect? I feel like Chris Rock when he said, "can't cheat -- want to cheat!"

Ill let others comment, but i think most on here follow the "If it fits in your macros" approach.

To me, its the only way to make it a permanent lifestyle and any "diet" or program that calls to eliminate foods or food groups is bound to fail

Focus on protein and hit your protein goal each day and high satiety foods, and carbs and fats will fall in place.

Focus on being in a calorie deficit and you will lose weight. If you are borderline obese and/or diabetic, then obviously a lower carb option would be the short term answer

This my personal theory that I used to lose like 20% body fat in a year... Since you just started don't cheat for a month, no sweets or carbs for like a month. You'll have cravings for 7-10 days or so then you'll be fine. That's what I did and after a month or 6 weeks or so I went to Jonny's pizza buffet and I didn't won't bad food again after that because I felt like shite.

Now one year later I consider my "lifestyle changed." So now I'll cheat when I want to, but I don't much and I'm in better control of my diet to where it's not a big deal. Last night a buddy wanted to go grab Mexican food, so I did, bit not a big deal. Had pork tenderloin and broccoliyesterday for lunch and tuna today.

Long and short of that is get yourself under control first and then you'll be in enough control and have enough knowledge to be able to "cheat." Be strict for a month to knock all the bad stuff out of your system and you'll be good to go.
