Low carb diet and cycling

I an type 2 diabetic and have been riding for 6 years now. I have been on metformin, invokana and a diabetes pump. Because I worry about long term meds and my numbers were good, I quit the invokana and cut back the metformin. What I didn't realize was those 2 drugs counteract the weight gain from insulin that also causes more insulin resistance. I have seen some research that indicates type 2 diabetes is best treated with low carb diet vs insulin. I am training for a 1200 km ride, PBP, in 2019. I have been trying to cut carbs from my diet, but I am finding that I more prone to bonking on my rides? Anyone have experience with endurance training and the transaction to LCHF diets. I am also about to get my gall bladder out, I don't know how that will affect a LCHF diet.

I have a hard time analyzing this given your T2D, meds and surgery.
But, in my experience, going through full fat adaptation (could take a month of serious low carb, high fat), keeping electrolytes up during rides (i do salt, True Lemon [totally unsweetened version] and a couple drops of stevia in one of my four hydration bottles when i run long distance--i also put a pinch of potassium citrate, but mostly salt during the actual run), and eating a LOT of fat the day before a long run is all I need for long distance. Add in MCT and exogenous ketones (for a race like that I'd probably invest in esters ($$$).
1200 km (just under 750 miles for us 'mericans) is a long-assed ride though. I personally would be adding carbs in the form of UCANN (or homemade superstarch) and/or glucose (esp for any high intensity days). But i just don't know how all that works with T2D.
I'll do some research.

Not sure how it would work with diabetes. I have very little experience with low carb, but do know if I attempt it again, I will not hesitate to take in carbs within 6-10 hours prior to the activity. And no issue at all taking in carbs during the event.

The books I have read:
The diabetes code and low carb diet for performance atheletes both stress after adaptation, this diet should enhance endurance. What I don't understand is: how do I train during the transition?
Right now I can ride 1.5 hrs on no food, no problem, but I can't go 3, and even if I start eating then, it's not going to be a good ride.

Also a type 2 diabetic looking to venture out into more endurance activities. To date I have yet to try to break through the wall (i.e. whenever your liver and muscle glycogen is completely depleted). Do you have a CGM or just a pump?
My treatment is currently 1000mg/day metformin, lazy-LCHF and exercise. I was only on insulin for a few days upon diagnosis but was able to stop. I was on glimepiride (also an SGLT-2 inhibitor) for a few months and was able to stop. Carb intake for me is <100g/day and try to get at least some exercise 2-3 times/day.
Out of curiosity have you ever been tested for type-1 antibodies? That seems to be a hefty medication load for a type 2!

One good resource may be Zach Bitter's (ultra runner) and Shawn Baker's podcast called Human Performance Outliers. They have some good guests and get into a lot of nuances of low carb performance.

I have a pump only not a cgm,
I have not been tested for type 1 antibodies to my knowledge.
My A1C is 7.6, they want it under 7.
It has been as high as 10.? Before they put me insulin. Biking has helped it dramatically.
None of my doctor's have mentioned LCHF diet to me, I do know a cardiologist that prescribed to it, but he bonked badly on the Ride the Rockies trip we made some years ago and had to carb up to make the climb.

Go onto a strict keto diet and your T2D will be cured. Your drug dealing Dr. won’t like it one bit.

Do you care more about curing your T2D and overall health or a bicycle ride? I would be much more concerned with longevity and eat a fasting focused keto diet and curing my T2D.

There are several sets of guidelines out there doctors may use, the American Diabates Association (A1C 7%, dietary guidelines not any different than a normal human's) and the more aggressive American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists guidelines (A1C 6.5% or other individualized goal if you can avoid the hypos, supportive of a plant based high-fat).
AACE Guidelines
Guiding organizations appear to be hesitant to rationalize an a high intake of meat/protein due to cardiovascular concerns I think.

I think this tends to be more case-by-case. If OP is an insulin dependent T2 with a severe cycling habit their insulin resistance may be too high or residual insulin production too low to get out of meds entirely even on a restrictive diet.
But yeah, many T2's can kick the expensive meds with keto/LCHF/basic carb restrictions. Even if you can keep it to metformin alone that's pretty cheap.
Except for the damn test strips, that's where they get ya!

Obviously I would like to cure the T2D and get off insulin, are you saying it's one or the other?

I have found the test strips (and mind are special because of the pump) are cheaper on Amazon than the pharmacy even with insurance!
