How do you breathe when doing cardio?

Where is the air supposed to be drawn into and how is it supposed to leave?

Next, what are the locus and exit conditions under non-cardio exercise (lifting).

And then just resting?

Breathing for lifting:

For cardio, I just sort of try to inhale and exhale. Dunno.

In through your nose, out through your mouth.

A very UNORTHODOX method I used to try out when I was running was putting some water in your mouth and holding it while running (try a minute then build up from there then just spit it out when it’s too tough on you.) It forces your body to breathe in and out of your nose at least temporarily while you get used to it. At first I always felt I was getting less air through the nose but once you get the hang of it it’s second nature to breathe in your nose then out your mouth.

When I run I do a 4 step breathing cadence (inhale, inhale, exhale, exhale) using one per step, so a complete breath cycle is 4 steps. I breath in through my nose and out through my mouth. And when it’s cold, which is my favorite running conditions, I blow those exhales up toward my nose so as to keep my breathing box warm.
When I bike I inhale through nose and exhale through mouth and vary the speed/intensity based on the need per work I’m doing,Watts I’m putting out.
When I swim I have to inhale through mouth and choose to exhale through mouth. I make sure all of my exhaling is done between strokes before I come back up for an inhale.
For lifting you want to exhale when you’re exerting effort, so when I’m coming up from a squat or pushing the bar up on bench. Generally inhale through nose and exhale through mouth here.
