Kidney stone/lithotripsy recovery

Wife (no pics) had 10mm kidney stone. Worse than birthing our 2 boys. Had lithotripsy on stone 10 days ago & feels much better. Pain is gone. Follow up xray today showed stone still in proximal ureter just south of the kidney & still 7mm. Too big to pass. Now she's understandably bummed. Anyone been down this road? Second lithotripsy? Doc says a ureteral stent would pass it but he discourages them because then permanent kidney stone like pain just from the stent's presence. Appointment with urologist next Tuesday. Any tips/advice appreciated!

Tuesday? How about tomorrow. My mom had a couple and said it was worse than childbirth. Get that mess sonic destroyed.

My wife agreed. Worse than childbirth. Since the first litho she's been pain free but seeing the stone still there yesterday on xray, albeit smaller from 10mm to 7mm, was disappointing. She's hoping/praying the pain doesn't return.

Kidney stone pro here. I have a had a Lithotripsy, Nephrostomy (stent) and an ?Ureteroscopy. Has the dr mentioned anything about a Ureteroscopy?

Not yet. Follow up visit Tuesday. Is that what you'd recommend?

I had a large kidney stone embedded in my left ureter. It was tearing my ureter as it was passing from Kidney.
A lot of bleeding. The doctor inserted a stent for about 1 1/2 weeks….. extremely painful when urinating. Then he went in and did a Ureteroscopy.

She had tons of pain as it exited the kidney to the proximal ureter. After the 10mm stone stuck in the proximal ureter the pain was still bad but not as bad. After lithotripsy the pain has disappeared altogether but the stone is still visible in the same location at approx 6.5mm. Wondering what the urologist will say Tuesday.

Please update after dr.appointment. Also have her kidney stone analyzed to see what type it is. My husband, sons, and I get calcium oxalate stones.....foods high in oxalates... not calcium.
Spinach, almonds, etc.., so whenever I eat high oxalate foods, I eat in moderation. Also, I eat cheese, yogurt, etc... food with calcium.
Calcium binds oxalate in the intestines. A diet rich in calcium helps reduce the amount of oxalate being absorbed by your body, so stones are less likely to form.

Saw doc today who said stent is way to go. So your stent was only temporary? I get the sense hers will be permanent with the understanding it'll always be there as something causing her discomfort which sucks but better than stones...

Yes, I had it for about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. My husband and my oldest son also had a temporary stent.

I've had them removed, but they went in, put in a stent, broke the stone up in place and removed it with the miniature arcade like claw machine gizmo.
Went back into the office 3 weeks later to have the stent removed. Had absolutely no pain while the stent was in place. However, the procedure to remove the stent is pretty intense, but I can only speak from my experience.
This is how it went:
Put in an exam room, told to undress from the waist down and handed a paper gown. Nurse came in and applied some gel on the head of the one-eyed ogre, came back in about 10 minutes later with a syringe that had a plastic nozzle on the end. Inserted that into the one-eyed ogre and loaded me up with some lubricant and deadener.
About 15 minutes later she and the Dr. return and he inserted a gizmo up my urinary tract and I could feel it going well into me gut. Then he had her hand him another tool that went inside the first and that had a claw that grabbed the stent and in one steady motion, he pulled all that out. The stent had to be damn near a foot long, which surprised the hell out of me that it was that big.
Not really painful, just uncomfortable. They do have u-tube videos of that procedure if you want to see exactly what I just described.

She was told her stent will be attached to a string like a tampon & taped to her belly. Also said she could slowly pull the stent out herself when the time comes or come to the office & they'd do it.

Yeah, that is another option and one I will take the next time I have to have that procedure done to remove kidney stones.
I've already had 5 removed like that over the past couple years, so I'm pretty sure I'm not done with them.
I just passed one a month ago and know for sure I have 4 more behind it after a CAT scan that will be giving me fits when the time comes.
I've passed over 20 stones so far.

I had about that same size stone. Lithotripsy broke it up but it stayed around at least a month. He was threatening and threatening to do the stent but I put him off and eventually it passed in two very large pieces.

Seems absurd to me that permanent kidney stone pain would be an option.

In my experience, they aren’t too accurate with their estimates about the size of the stone in the ureter. They are telling you the post lithotripsy pieces won’t pass, but I would do my damndest to pass them without more procedures.
What I would do is drink at least a gallon of water per day.
My experience was that the stone pieces passing out of my body felt weird rather than painful. The pain was when that big SOB left my kidney and got into the tube.
