So I’ve been doing IF for about 2 years now and I absolutely love it, maybe my favorite health / diet / fitness thing I’ve ever tried, and I’m a sucker for trying every new thing out there.

However, I’ve recently started this new job where things are crazy, and I don’t seem to ever have control of how / when my days end. I used to workout after work, but I just can’t get a routine locked down. The one thing I do know is that I’m a morning person and can of course control what happens at 5 AM so thinking of making the switch to morning workouts.

However, I’ve always been the “gotta have protein and calories” right after a workout person, but with IF I don’t eat until noon. Am I gonna be fvcked if I workout and then go ~5 hours without eating? I can’t move the IF up and miss dinner, just won’t work from a lifestyle standpoint.

Any thoughts?

Protein shake right after workout is what I do. Breaks your fast but I gotta have something before noon and the only thing I was really attempting to do with IF was caloric intake restriction.

You can stop eating earlier in the day, so you still get however many hours of fasting, including the most of that time which is always when you're sleeping. Might be hard into the evenings, but if your last meal is at 2, and your workout is over at 6 when you eat, you still end up with 16 hours fasting and 8 hours to get your food in.

I would try just having your scoop of protein or whatever right after and then just keep going about your same schedule as you do now. It's not technically IF anymore but maybe you won't notice a difference.

Yea I mean I just can’t imagine how anyone with any semblance of a social life stops ingesting calories at 2 o’clock in the day, totally not feasible for me.

One of Andrew Hubermans podcasts said if your goal is muscle growth then you need some protein within the first 3 waking hours for protein synthesis. He also pointed out you will lose the other benefits of IF if you do that so it’s really up to what your goals are.

I lift heavy for 45 minutes or run 3-4 miles every morning at 5:15am, and I don’t eat until noon.

Sucks to adjust at first, but it’s 100% doable. Tim Ferriss has a book called “The Four Hour Body” which goes over how a 20/4 IF schedule still works for lifting weights. Consuming protein within 30 minutes of the workout is optimal, but it’s not essential.

Not an issue at all, I did your exact situation (IF with moving workout to the morning due to work pressure) and had zero issues.

Strength continued to progress, body comp was fine.

If you ate a good dinner, you have what you need.

Not sure why I got downvoted on the above comment. Listen to the 1:04:50ish mark for a minute or 2 and Huberman pretty much says your body wants protein for Hypertrophy 1-3 hours after waking up.

You are totally fine waiting. I usually work out at noon (100% fasted). I have my first thing to eat between 3:30 and 4:00. Finish eating by 8:00. Generally eat pretty healthy, but have weeks where I go off the rails a little and barely notice a difference. As long as you're not a competitive athlete or trying to be a bodybuilder, you're all good.

You don’t need to eat after you workout. I wo hard in mornings and typically don’t eat until 3 or later. It may take some adjustment but the idea that you must eat after you wo is bunk.
