Inguinal hernia surgery

I’ve had this stupid hernia on my left groin since 2009. I haven’t had issues with it until last year. It’s gotten bigger due to my powerlifting days. It’s now causing small intestinal blockages. Like today, I was supposed to meet my gf’s (no pics of her) sons for the first time at the Texas state fair and I woke up sick af with another blockage. I missed all the fun today. I do have surgery on November 3rd. What should I expect the first days after? How long is the recovery time? When can I lift again? I’m 41, in good shape, and have never had a major surgery before. I just want this thing to stop ruining days like today.

Dude, if the hernia is large/significant enough to be causing “blockage” you need it fixed ASAP. That’s not something to mess around with.

I agree and my surgeon’s soonest appt was November 3rd, so I am getting it fixed.

What type of surgery are you having to repair? Laparoscopic or robotic surgery will require less time to heal.
You can start doing light exercise in a few weeks but I wouldn’t be in a hurry to lift heavy weights.

I think she's doing the laparoscopic. Said she's going in through my stomach, down to my groin. (I could be wrong). I've already stopped lifting because I don't want to make things worse beforehand. Just doing a ton of cardio now.

I had inguinal and umbilical hernia surgery two years ago. The inguinal surgery was meant to be laparoscopic, but the hernia ended up being so large it had to be done traditionally. So my recovery was probably longer than yours will be.
Immediately following the surgery, I felt pretty good. I was standing and walking around. In retrospect, I think I was still enjoying the effects of anesthesia.
The next couple of days were pretty miserable. I was able to get around, but it was painful.
The rest of the week I was sore, but not really in pain. I think I stopped taking my pain medication after day four.
After a week, I was going on long walks. My doctor did not want me doing any strenuous exercise for a month.
There are two things I wasn't prepared for. First was the swelling. My ball sack looked like a black and blue grapefruit. It was disgusting. And you're expected to stuff your incredibly swollen balls into a pair of compression shorts - miserable. The second and worst thing was the constipation. Anesthesia causes constipation in some people. I wasn't ready for "some people" to be me.
Here's my advise. Expect to be fairly immobile for a couple of days. You're not going to be lifting for a month. Have several icepacks ready. You'll be rotating through those. Take stool softeners to get ahead of the constipation. Have a powerful laxative ready if those fail.
In a couple of months you'll be feeling better than you have in years.

I've had 2 hernia surgeries in the same spot. First time was laproscopic, 2nd one had to be a full slice'n'dice surgery due to the scar tissue from previous one.
My advice:
1)Give yourself plenty of time to heal and don't push it
2) If you have to get a 2nd surgery it will take even longer to recover and you'll be out of exercising for an even longer time.
3)What the previous poster said about the stool softener/laxative. I won't give you the disgusting details but that is good advice. Start with the softeners days ahead of time and have the laxative handy. After the 2nd surgery I had to make a trip to the emergency room with issues related to this. it was awful.

I had a double hernia surgically repaired by laparoscopic surgery about 20 years ago now and it was very easy to recover from.
They did 3 small incisions to get the instruments, camera and material in my gut to do the surgery.
I was home about 3 hours after getting out the OR and I had no issues during recovery as long as I took it easy. Mobility was fine and I did most of the things I was doing prior to surgery except any heavy lifting or stuff that required using abs for a few weeks.
I've not had any issues since, but before the surgery I was in pain affecting my lower abdomen after being on my feet for just a few hours.
It's a piece of cake and you'll be fine.
Oh, and those meds that put you under are first rate. You are talking to the anesthesiologist one minute and then ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ until they wake you up.
Reminds me of an old "Honeymooners" episode when Norton is hypnotized and told to count down from 100. He starts, "100, 99, threeeeeeeee" and is under.

I found out 3 years ago that I had a right inguinal hernia. Sometimes wonder if I’m feeling symptoms but never quite sure.
Trying to avoid surgery unless necessary.

Had surgery today. Very sore. Pain isn’t intense or too bad yet. Been taking everyone’s advice. Hopefully it continues to go this smoothly

It will get worse once the anesthesia wears off completely. The first day was rough getting in and out of recliner or bed. By day three I was moving around pain free though.
The constipation was the worst part around day two….

I’ve had a little more pain today but it’s tolerable. Haven’t had any major issues yet. Maybe I’ll get lucky

Good luck with the recovery and don't do anything outside of what the Dr. said to do------and not do.
