Has anyone here run the R2R2R (rim to rim to rim) in the Grand Canyon?

If so, do you have any good training resources? I'm looking for a good training regimen, but haven't found much yet.

Without the explanation it sounds naughty.

Haha- I had a feeling such a comment was inevitable.

It's a long trail run across the Grand Canyon and back. Start at one rim (i.e. side) of the GC, run down to and across the bottom, run up the other side (i.e. rim). Then you turn around, run down to and across the bottom again, and up back to where you started. It's approximately 45 miles and 10,000 feet of elevation gain/loss).

I've hiked it, and going down is punishing on the knees. If you're a flatlander like me, I don't know of a way to really train for that part of it.

I have some friends who just did it a few weeks ago, a husband and wife. It took them like 18 hours. It sounded really brutal (as one would expected)

They were with some other people and I think 2 guys had to spend the night on the trail for some reason

I've been backpacking in the Grand Canyon several times over the years. This upcoming trip will be my 10th hike. I'm not stupid enough to run it. I did R2R and R2R2R. Going downhill is a lot tougher than people think.

When I got back from a hike back in November, I discovered an exercise that I'm currently using for the upcoming trip.

It's peddling backwards on the elliptical machine on high resistance. It feels very similar to going downhill.

I watched many YouTube videos of people running R2R2R. Most people suffer. Some collapse on the trail. My advice is to prepare for it months in advance. Avoid summer time.

Yes we did south Kaibab down to phantom range up bright angel in late October. Took about 12.5 to 13 hours. I did treadmill 3x week for about 1 hour each time at 12-15 degrees grade - the max is 15 on treadmill. We did longer walks on Saturdays usually 14-18 miles. Our program or training lasted from Aug till the hike in late October.
This May we are doing down south Kaibab up north Kaibab we are incorporating more up and down stuff on Saturday’s.
There is a spreadsheet out there called couch rim to rim in 12 weeks that’s a great reference.
