I have osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) in my right knee, and my orthopedic doc suggested doing Synvisc injections to help manage pain instead of doing steroid injections.

Has anybody tried Synvisc before? The reviews online are mixed.

Have had them twice for OA in my left knee that will eventually need a replacement. They normally last 6-12 months but a few lucky ones (me included) last 4 years. I am needing one now. As for the injection, it is not too bad. They mix lidocaine in with the meds so just pressure really. I highly recommend them. And good luck.

I’ve been giving hyaluronic acid (Synvisc, Supartz, GenVisc 850) injections for almost four years and have had positive results of decreased pain in every patient except one who had previously failed a series of injections. Her knee was stage 4 OA.

It doesn’t hurt to try as there are minimal side effects which are mostly related to the injection itself and not the drug.

Steroid infections are great for the pain, but there are many strong side effects and the steroids will degrade the joint even worse with each injection.

Recently I’ve been doing PRP with hyaluronic acid injections. So far, great results including a lady who had two rounds in December and says she’s having less pain now than she’s had for many years.

Thank you for the info.

Volt, since you're a doctor, do think stem cell therapy is an option for OA patients who want to return to high impact activity such as jogging? I know it's not covered by insurance, but I am willing to pay out of pocket.

Stem cells are definitely an option for OA.
I have given them to several patients, but not for someone with OA (lumbar paraspinals, IV infusions, shoulder).
I have seen before and after knee xrays that showed an increase in the size of the joint space which is accomplished by an increase/growth in cartilage.

Stem cell injections in the knee could literally be the difference in needing a knee replacement one day or not.
I recently shadowed another provider who said that they do PRP prior to stem cells.

Be warned, I’m a nurse practitioner. Many on TD would say I don’t know a damn thing about medicine.
