Google FMLA, maybe you qualify for that and talk to your employer. I've never had a broken bone but I'd imagine it's like any other injury and its going to require time and rest to heal correctly.

I'm assuming you went to the doctor? Did they put you in cam boot? Honestly, the two best things you can do for it are ice and elevation to keep the swelling down as much as possible.
It takes 6-8 weeks for bone to heal. If you try and cheat it now and do too much you can prolong that and possibly end up with a malunited or non-united fracture. The best thing to do is take off some time now, rest, and let it heal to avoid making it a bigger problem.

Ok. The podiatrist should give you a boot or a surgical shoe to help immobilize and rest the area.
Assuming the metatarsal is not displaced significantly he will likely recommend as I said above: 6-8 weeks for healing, and no weight bearing on that foot for at least for a portion of that time.
Ice, not heat, and elevation are your friend for now.

I broke my foot recently and the ortho gave me some pain meds, but told me to avoid taking any sort of ibuprofen or anti inflammatory to help reduce swelling as that slows down the healing process. It was boot + elevation + ice and compression when sleeping. Crutches + boot for the first 3-4 weeks

True as long as there's a fracture. It will slow bone healing.
If no fracture, then you'd want the anti-inflammatory

I sprained my ankle pretty bad recently and had to get a walking boot. They wanted over $300 in BR. I found it on Amazon for $70. It's called the Aircast FP Walker. It did wonders for my pain and mobility and was worth every cent.
