Looking at the numerous studies I've read, the earliest evidence for lowered metabolic rate in response to fasting occurred after 60 hours (-8% in resting metabolic rate). Other studies show metabolic rate is not impacted until 72-96 hours have passed (George Cahill has contributed a lot on this topic).

Seemingly paradoxical, metabolic rate is actually increased in short-term fasting. For some concrete numbers, studies have shown an increase of 3.6% - 10% after 36-48 hours (Mansell PI, et al, and Zauner C, et al). This makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. Epinephrine and norepinephrine (adrenaline/noradrenaline) sharpens the mind and makes us want to move around. Desirable traits that encouraged us to seek for food, or for the hunter to kill his prey, increasing survival. At some point, after several days of no eating, this benefit would confer no benefit to survival and probably would have done more harm than good; instead, an adaptation that favored conservation of energy turned out to be advantageous. Thus metabolic rate is increased in short-term fasting (up to 60 hours).

Found it, 60 seemed on the lower end, that's why I asked. Straight from his site - I agree with the evolutionary aspect of it.

Dipping helps suppress my appetite during the day

Same here. It also turns me into a cheap drunk if I start drinking before dinner.

Joe Rogan had Dr. Andy Galpin on his podcast a couple weeks ago and he shared a ton of information on fasting if anyone's interested it's a pretty cool discussion.

I listened to the entire podcast and I swear fasting was never brought up. Are you sure you have the right one?

I can't figure out where I saw Martin post it, but he posted a few studies one time showing the effects of fasting on muscle loss. I believe one saw very minor conversion of muscle into glycogen at the 36 hour mark but by 48 hours the participants bodies had moved completely into ketosis and stayed there until around the 72 hour mark where there was minor conversion until close to the 100 hour mark where the conversion of muscle into glycogen started dramatically rising.

I remember though that they noted the more those with greater than 25% body fat though still stayed in ketosis and those with greater than 40% body fat stayed in for a crazy anount of time.

My bad. It was actually from his pdcast with Dom D’Agostino, Ph.D. Both are really interesting listens.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll try that one out.

@NotoriousFSU,

What's the podcast name? I love intermittent fasting discussions. I find it very interesting to see what we can do with our bodies when we break from the norm. I've gone up to a 48 hour fast, and it's actually remarkable how easy it is once you break the mental barrier or trigger to eat.

It's the Joe Rogan Experience(?), episode 996 or something. It's one of the more recent ones. And make no mistake--it is about keto. The dude is more of an expert than anybody you've likely ever heard/read. The do mention IF briefly early on, but really get into fasting in general towards the last 15-20 minutes of the podcast. The entire thing was very informative. Kudos to Notorious here for telling us about it.
