I figured this would likely be the best board to post this question....It’s sadly been awhile since I’ve owned a bike, however from the time I could ride until 15ish I lived on my Trek 820.

Wife and I have been living mostly full time on the road in our Class C the past 2 years and recently finished a Transit conversion so we’re ready to hit the road again! We always bring our kayaks but I’d really like to get a bike to make quick “to town” runs or play around on some light trails.

-Any thoughts on the Marlin 4 vs 5? I realize both are budget level bikes, but I don’t need anything too fancy.
-Any comparable suggestions? My Trek held up great to all the abuse I put it through so naturally that’s were I looked first. I know back in the day Diamondback, Cannondale and Specialized were some of the bigger, quality names. Anything from these or others I haven’t mentioned that would be recommended that I check out?
-Hydraulic vs Clamp brakes, never had a bike with hydraulic disks, are they really worth the premium over say me purchasing another 820?

Thanks in advance for all the help! Open to any additional suggestions.

In my experience, Trek was very expensive compared to others. At least for road bikes. Great bikes, just very expensive. Specialized, Giant, Scott, etc. are all good brands. I had a cheaper cyclocross bike with cable disc brakes and it was awful. I have hydraulic brakes on my mountain bike and they are night and day different. I never had issues with standard brakes on my road bikes though.

Now I haven't ridden regularly in 3 years and bike tech seems to change yearly. So I may be speaking in obsolete terms

Good bike for your need.

Diamondback, Cannondale and Specialized

All good brands that will offer similar priced trail bikes. Also check out Marin, Co-op (an REI brand), Giant, Fuji. You might have better luck finding these bikes used and will get a better components if you don't mind gently used.

I think they're useful and will always say yes to that question. They come equipped with most new hardtail trail bikes anyhow.

Caveat: I ride Road Bikes so know that but—

Unless your spending ALOT shop components and fit first and name brand second.

Rock Hopper is widely known to be the best budget mountain bike.

Disc brakes work better in wet weather, easier to clean, and most importantly less squeaky.

I just bought a Poseidon Redwood for a change of pace from my full suspension MTB bike. Probably wouldn't be a good fit for your wife but for $900 it is one of the best values you'll find. It is an absolute blast on light trails and with the drop bars rides well on the road and has all the mounting points you could need for your trips to town.

Poseidonbikes.com if you want to check it out.

And yes hydraulic brakes are night and day better but mechanical disc brakes if set up correctly are better than most rim brakes and hydraulic can suck to work on if you do your on maintenance where as mechanicals are gravy to get dialed in. If your not looking to spend a lot of money mechanical will be just fine especially if your not accustomed to hydraulic.

There are several brands with sub $1000 mail order "gravel" bikes which sounds like would fit your needs better than a traditional MTB bike.
