I been interested in getting into jiu jitsu lately, mostly for self defense type stuff. Have no desire to compete. Anyone here take classes? Where if so?

I've been training for 8 years.

It's a long but extremely rewarding journey.

One of the best forms of fighting you can learn. I would do it myself, but the membership was a little more than I could of afford.

Been doing classes off and on for years. Very good workout, and can be extremely helpful in real world scenarios.
Go to JM Modern in Baton Rouge. Very knowledgeable guy with an non-intimidating atmosphere. Perfect for beginners.

Second this.

They’re a checkmat affiliate so we have their professors come out to our gym (Vida jiu jitsu) and teach once a week or so.

I’ve also trained a couple times in BR with them and it’s a great group of guys.

All 3 gyms in BR are great. Bayou, JM, and Gracie United. Go try a free class at each and see which one you like the best before you give anyone your money. BJJ is very much a stylistic thing and there are a million different ones, you’ll know which gym feels the most “right” after you try several
