A few years ago, while power cleaning, I snapped my wrist pretty bad. It swole up and I had it X-rayed within the next day or so.

The results came back as no break, or fracture but just a really serious sprain. This was in 2013. Since then I’ve had a terrible nagging pain in my wrist. I can normally just take some otc pain pills and wrap it and get through a workout but I feel like the pain should have gone away by now. It’s been 5 years.

I’ve tried stretching it, wrapping it, icing it, etc but I’m worried to won’t ever be normal. I’m considering a cortisone shot or surgery. Anyone else ever experience anything like this?

sprains are permanent weakening of the joint.

the worse, or repeated sprains, continue to permanently weaken the joint.

my ankles, for example, are totally fricked. My right is bad enough that another sprain will so totally weaken the joint that surgery will be required.

I had a third-degree sprain in my right ankle 20 years ago. If I step on anything unexpectedly my foot turns over. It's weak as shite, but luckily doesn't cause any pain.

I like(d) power cleans, and had always done them because of a sports background.

About 4 years ago I stopped doing them and have never gone back. My left wrist couldn't take the catch. I might be able to get away with it for a session or two, but I was at the point where I couldn't go longer than a week or two without crippling wrist pain.

Is there an exercise that triggers pain? The part of your post about power cleans made me wonder. I just sub KB swings and I've been fine.

It really just depends on the angle. Sometimes I can bench without any issues, sometimes my wrist turns at just the right spot and it’s killer pain. KB swings are fine, but push-ups, or any kind of overhead work is really painful. I normally just eat ibuprofen and wrap it to get through it.

I've had to lay off overhead work with the shoulder injury I'm working through.

Getting good wrist wraps helped me support my wrist while benching. Also, setting up with the bar deep in my palm so I get a vertical wrist helped. My first cue is to roll my wrists to try to get vertical, then squeeze the hell out of the bar.

It sounds like you have your biggest issues when you have pressure on the wrist with it bent back, which was my issue too.

I had the same injury a few years ago, but the pain went away. You may want to see a specialist.
