I had 3 level posterior neck fusion. Day after operation, I lost movement in both arms but could move my hands. After 2 months of physical therapy, I got most of my arm movement back.

It's been over 2 years and still having severe nerve pain across my back doing minimal chores. My hand goes numb and I keep dropping things. Last strength test in grip strength I scored a 45 in one hand and 40 in the other. Just seeing if anybody here as any experience with this. Thanks

Any recent imaging? After a fusion, the levels above and below the fusion take a lot of extra stress. Could be an issue there. Was there foraminotomies and a laminectomy with the fusion? When you say “across my back”, do you mean the neck at the site of the surgery, or the mid/lower back?

Thanks for the reply back guys. Dr Willis in Shreveport did it. It was a three level posterior laminectomy fusion. He said I was born with a narrow spinal canal.

I played football in highschool and 20 years of martial arts. I always felt that something wasn't right when I was 20. I would get severe sciatica and Drs did MRI in my lower back. Then say my back was fine. So I just sucked it up and took a lot of ibuprofen and messed my kidneys up.

Two years ago I was carrying mulch and neck went numb and I collapsed. They finally did MRI on my neck and they said I had to get surgery within a week. They did follow up MRI and cat scan but said everything was holding up. The severe nerve pain Is across my back shoulder level. They did the fusion c3 to c6. But c7 is messed up too. Sorry for the long post.

Have you went to pain management? I had a Cervical fusion and ended up having to occasionally have radio frequency ablations. If they get the correct nerve it works really well.

Unfortunately I got laid off during the COVID crap and my insurance lapsed. Before I could get another job, I found out how bad my neck was. Then had to get Medicaid and when the surgery went bad, I got a call of social security saying they were putting me on disability. Had to have my daughter put the phone to my ear.

But Medicaid doesn't cover radio frequency. I've been trying to get diagnosed for thirty years and they looked everywhere but my neck. If they could have found it a couple of months earlier, things might have turned out differently. Would've had a better doctor.

My parents had their own business growing up and started me working at a young age. I was paying social security and taxes when I was 12. I have dreams every week iam back at work and wake up pissed when I realized it was a dream. But I have a great family and support system. Good thing is I can feed myself and groom myself. There are people that have it a lot worse. Just not strong enough to make a good pot of gumbo. Thanks for the reply back brother.

It’s probably more that doctors don’t take Medicaid. However there are training programs (fellowships) for interventional pain doctors that usually take Medicaid. Sounds like you are in north LA so I have linked the pain fellowship in Schreveport but there are some in NOLA as well. You may want call them and confirm they take your insurance and what is needed for an appointment.
