Zosia grass and bent greens is what led to those low scores at the PGA

I did not realize that. I will definitely be checking that stuff before other golf tournaments I may bet on.

them playing a course that shouldn’t be a major venue is what led to the high scores

The course was fine. Soft conditions and little wind were the culprits.

No, plenty of difficult courses with zoysia and bentgrass. Most of the greens up north are bent grass.
The low scores were because the course was easy. No contouring on or around the greens. Hazards 40-50 yards into the rough that were hardly in play. Bunkers cut to grade making them very easy to play out of. If you have big greens and flat areas around them, pros are going to destroy a place no matter how long you try to make the golf course.
Look at Xander's last two holes. Iffy drives that he was able to hit easy bail out shots to large flat areas with simple up and downs (made them look simple even with the pressure of winning a major).
If pros can do that, then take dead aim when they are in position, they aren't going to make very many bogeys

This is the Golf Board . . . it seems like we should correctly refer to them as historically LOW scores.

Short flat areas? He hit a ball a foot above his feet. Wouldn’t call his drive on 18 iffy. It was 2 yards left of being perfect.
The course was soft and wet and there was no wind. No matter the course tour players will tear it up when it’s like that. The PGA championship isn’t always a low scoring -10 or less tournament. They’ve historically had some extremely LOW SCORES win.

I love bent grass greens. If the ones at Valhalla were as full of ridges as rtj in Prattville there would have been a lot more 3 putts. I couldn’t believe how many putts they hit had little or no break

There wasn't much challenge or penalty for mistakes. Big shallow bunkers, soft conditions, tightly mown 1st and 2nd cut rough, smooth greens. Water wasn't really in play. The distance of the course didn't really help with the soft conditions. Players were able to stick balls on fairways and greens with no fear of extra roll.
It was entertaining, but not even close to a major championship test

This is my general point. Not much to separate good shots from bad.
It's why it was a birdie race with a very bunched leaderboard way under par

That was the surprising part to me that should have been easy to predict from the PGA. None of the fairway bunkers I saw required really any consideration of the lip and balls frequently rolled down to the flat or even upslope instead of plugging. The players were even talking about the bunker on 18 being the "miss" because it was that easy to play out of.

the rain made the course play too soft. not much you can do about that.
