My current 5 iron has 23 degrees of loft, and I average about 200-210 yards of carry off of a tee. I am looking at a UDI 3 iron with 20 degrees of loft. On a rough estimation, how many yards would I add by going with the 3 iron off the tee with -3 degrees of loft?

Plan on using it off the tee on tight fairways for short to mid length par 4's.

Around 12yards would be my guess. Every degree equals around 3 yards. UDI is a great stick so I tacked on a bit more

3 yards per 1° works in a vacuum with like clubs.

OP,
The fact you are looking at a club with inherently less spin, different shaft, longer shaft, etc. you may see a much longer increase.

As others have said, 3-1, but the shaft will make the biggest difference.

Is that the right way to figure your averages for irons?

If the UDI is for teeing off only it’s fine

OP why UDI and not hybrid or 5W? Just curious

My 5 wood I hit okay but not as consistently straight as I do my 5 iron. I’m playing in some am tour tournaments and have had quite a few tee shots go OB which have kept me from winning. We play a lot of tight fairways and I just want something that I can rely on going relatively straight consistently and with a decent amount of distance. My 5 iron off the tee I have never missed a fairway but some of the longer par 4’s it leaves me with a long iron into the green.

I’ve found that I average different yardages when I tee balls up versus hitting them off of turf

Well yeah, me too. I’m just wondering if that’s the way people figure their averages for irons. I’ve always done it based off of hitting it from the grass. 200-210 is a good distance with your 5i. What’s the carry? Like, if you had to land it in some part of the green and hold it as close as possible, what’s the yardage for your 5i you’re comfortable with?

Probably 190-200 but I don’t usually have that distance left to the green so I don’t have a lot experience with that kind of shot. With the short par 4’s on most courses, the longest I usually have left into a green is probably 170-180

Then you are on the right track with a UDI. That Ping is hot

Similar line of thought, but has anyone bent a hybrid? I have a Ping G25 20 that I'd like to bump up to a 22 to help split my 5w to 5i. Don't have a 4i.
