When should I start my boy in golf?

I grew up as a tennis player so I figure it’s somewhat similar. I started at about 5, and made it my only sport by age 10.
I would imagine golf is similar that it takes an early focus to become successful?
ETA: I don’t care if my son ever picks up a club. But I am glad my father gave me the opportunity to become as successful as I was in tennis.

Whatever you do don't do this. Whether your kid focuses on one sport or plays 3 or 4, they'll have about a. 01% to go pro. In fact, I think being a more well rounded athlete helps in most sports. But to answer your original question no age is really to young. I went to the week long summer camp deal at the course at 4 or 5.

I get what you are saying somewhat, but for tennis I would have never gotten where I got without becoming a 1 sport athlete early......
Football, basketball, and baseball are different. You can be a multi sport athlete and make it. I always thought golf was more like tennis

There's guys on the PGA tour that played college football and basketball

My son is 4. Has been swinging a club since 2. It was just something he saw me doing and wanted to copy. But he took to it on his own. Loves the range and putting. Actually says he likes putting more. He’s been riding with me during rounds for a year now. Sits quiet. Comes to the green to putt. Waits his turn. I don’t give him pointers at all other than “swing hard, dude.”

Oh I’m sure there are some. But it’s the extreme minority

The extreme minority plays after highschool so pigeon holing a kid into one sport is pretty dumb. Ask any pro coach if the think a kid should be a single sport athlete, 99% will say no.

Dude you are wrong, at least in terms of tennis
If you aren’t focusing solely on that sport my 10-12, your chance of success is extremely low
I assumed there was some college level golfers in where so I am asking to see if it is similar, which I assumed it was

It sounds like you've already made up your mind so why even ask? And I know more than a dozen guys that played in college and more than a handful of pros, a couple of which play on the PGA Tour.

When I was on the LSU tennis team, Loupe was the only multi sport athlete on the golf team at the time, which was similar to how our team was....
That’s what I am asking. It seemed you came here to preach

I'm talking about little league and shite dude, not college athletics. I know for a fact Smylie Kaufman played high school basketball and Loupe can ball too. A lot of these guys start focusing on golf sophomore year or so of highschool because their talent is obvious, but most all of them played little league.

Bro high school starts at what 13?
So when I say 10-12 you start focusing on one sport why are you freaking out?
I played little league too. But at 10 I focused only on tennis. And I am glad I had a parent that helped to facilitate that because it gave a lot to me

Well are you asking what age to start playing golf or what age to exclusively play golf? Because those are 2 very different questions and you don’t have to worry about the latter for several years.
Your kid just turned 2 brah.
It’s pretty simple right now. Why don’t you start letting him play and have fun, and if he loves it and is talented, then you can start mapping out his future as a pro in another 6-8 years.

Christ guys. I don’t care if he only fishes and hunts for the rest of his life...
I’m just wondering when I should first get him an official lesson and such, to where I can know it wasn’t me not giving him the opportunity that was the issue

It's too late buddy. Tiger Woods was already on the Johnny Carson show at 2 and your boy hasn't even taken a lesson. You might as well go buy him some tap shoes and a leotard.

I only hope one day there can be a tennis board so I can return the favor and as big of a prick as you

My fil was on the LSU tennis team. He beat Connors on the Junior Circuit when he was 11 in Tennessee. He rode the train by himself up there, delivered bidness, and came home.
