What was your most memorable round you’d rather forget?
Posted by LSUERDOC on 3/2/18 at 1:13 am21
When I was in med school in San Antonio I played a lot of golf. There are some awesome courses around that city. Anyway, one of my favorite courses is The Bandit in New Braunfels. It’s a tough track and if you’re spraying the ball off the tee then you’ll have a miserable round.
Playing only 6900yds from the tips, it’s not that long of a course, but it feels like it plays much longer. Anyway, I was playing well and was -3 on 17th teebox. It’s a shortish par 3 over a ravine with a bunker guarding the back of the green and the ravine in front. I holed out a PW so I’m -5. I was a 6 handicap then and had never been in that situation before. 18 is a relatively easy, reachable par 5 that I usually birdied or parred. I smoked my tee shot down the middle despite being nervous for the first time in the round. I had 220yds to carry the creek in front of the green. I couldn’t go at the green because a big oak tree was blocking my shot...no big deal. I’ve played from this part of the fairway numerous times. I hit a decent 2nd shot with my 5w but I pulled it a bit and it hit that oak tree and went into the water. This where the wheels fell off the wagon. I flubbed my 4th shot into the water. My 6th shot I hit it over the green onto a steep embankment behind the green. My 7th shot I was just trying to ease it down onto the green and hit it thin over the green into the bunker down by the oak tree. My 8th shot didn’t make it to the putting surface and rolled back down to my feet in the bunker. I was pissed by this point and hit it a bit hard but it landed on the green. I made a 20ft putt for a 10...worst even par round ever.
I had shot even par a few times before that but I had never been under par. I let that one get away. My best round since then is a 69. I was -5 on 11 that day but had a few bad holes.
At 47, my good rounds are behind me. But I still love the game.

Read the whole thing. Good stuff.
Mine:
Shot 68 with the best player in my club.
Next round, low heel drive in play. Hozzle second shot to the right of the green, get up and down.
Hit the fairway on 2. Shank a 4 iron, shank a 4 iron, shank a 6 iron, on the green 2 putt.
Get off the box on 3, shank a pw, up and 2 putt.
4 is a par 3, shanked an 8 iron.
Left the course. That's a round I'd like to forget.

Regionals in H.S. Played our home course, shot the highest score in the whole state. End up winning, not that it was due to my efforts. At the state trny., guess who teed off first. It was at LSU, the old course. My brother was going to school there at the time so he came and caddied for me the first nine. Par 4 with a ditch cutting across the fairway about a hundred yards off the tee. Brother gave me a pep talk, and I stand on the tee in front of about a hundred players and coaches. Hit a worm burner gets to the ditch and bounces over. Got a spattering of applause.

I've done this a few times, it's not a specific round but "one of those day's" kind of rounds, 18 straight pars. Did this in college a few times most recently, two weeks ago.
Atchafalaya. Shot 38 on the front. Parred 10,11,12,13,14,15. Laying 2 on the left side of 16 green (Par-5). Skull my pitch across the green into the bunker. Ball is sitting in some bamboo shoots growing up out of the sand, but I have a clean look at the back of the ball. The flag is only about 20 ft away. Up and down for par, right?
I proceed to have a total brain fart and leave it in the bunker and the lie just keeps getting worse. End up taking a 10. Finish Par, Bogey for an 80.

I was 15 playing in a tournament in South Florida.
The first day of the tournament I came out firing, and got to 6 under very quickly. A rain storm blew in off the coast, as they often do in Florida, and it completely threw me off my game. I finished the day shooting 70, and scrapped out a 72 the following day. I ended up tied for the lead, and subsequently lost the tournament in a playoff against Jude Eustaquio, who went on to play at UF and was HS teammates with Brooks Koepka. Goes to show you, you can't ever play scared. Always keep the gas pedal down and go lower.
Probably not the most memorable round I'd like to forget, but always sticks out as one I really let slip because I didn't stay aggressive and played not to lose.

i got heat stroke and puked in the middle of the fairway on river place in austin. it was early august and i did not prehydrate well enough.
it is a spectacular course with all kinds of elevation changes and scenary but frick that place. forces you to lay up, approach par 5 on your 3rd shot because of canyons. i hate the course design, but love the look:
par 5 not reachable in 2 at all:

i understand, and believe me i have no business reaching any par 5 in two. it is hard to explain but river place design forces you to lay up on a lot of holes.
steiner ranch, barton creek in the same area are much better layouts while using similar geography

I grew up playing a ton of courses that rewarded strategy and thinking your way around a course more than overpowering, so perhaps I have a unique perspective. I never had a problem being forced to lay-up because my wedge game used to be a huge strength for me, however as I've aged those 50-80 yard shots aren't quite as welcome as they one were.

Easy, the first time I played in a scramble tournament with my Grandfather. It was a benefit tournament at Bayou Barriere in Belle Chasse, I was 17 and could kill the ball. I sunk a 50 footer on the first hole for eagle and must have driven 5 greens that day but the best part was playing with him.

So why would you rather forget that round?

I mean, it's normally not. But I've gotten there in two before.
It takes two pretty big hits, but if it's a little downwind it's doable. Not always smart because it's very difficult to hold the green, but it is possible.

For me, I was playing in a qualifier. Hadn't played a ton leading up to the tourney and was struggling with a miss right off the tee.
Par the 1st. Get to the par 5 2nd hole with OB right. Thought about taking 3-wood but went with the driver instead. OB. Think there's no way I'll do it twice in a row so I stay with the driver. OB. Then take 3-wood and hit it down the middle, but 3-putt for a 10.
Play the rest of the round 2 over to miss qualifying by two strokes. Brutal.

Oh snap. Read that wrong.
In woods off first tee.
No find.
Onward.
Nearly kill onlookers with drive on 2.
Try 2 iron. Skitters on ground maybe 25 yards.
Again, into woods.
Finish hole 2 with 8.
No redeeming features to next holes. Bogey bogey double double including missing putts from 18 inches back to back holes.
I walked off course at clubhouse 8/9 turn.
Was playing with guys who drink two beers to loosen up before round. They were like, see, you should have had a couple.

At Twin Pines CC. Started on the back nine and went 10 under on that side. Got it to 13 under after 15, got rained out before I could finish the next 3 holes.
Came back the next day with a drivable par 4, and a par 5 that's reachable in 2 left to play.
BOGEY, BOGEY, BOGEY.
I hate this game sometimes.

SC State HS Championships at Furman University my senior year, final round. We played 36 the first day, and I shot 76-75. The next day, I was -1 through 15, and my team was making a late charge. #16 is a short par 3, somewhere around 135 yards. I plugged a wedge into the front face of the bunker short and right of the green. Took me two to get out, and the second one went way over the green. I lost my composure and end up making a triple bogey.
I compounded it with bogeys on 17 and 18 to finish with another 76. I was the only senior on my team, and we finished in 4th place, two shots out of a medal. Those last few holes still haunt me to this day.
