weak grip vs strong grip question

OK, so I'm fairly new to trying to "learn golf and work on a swing" and I'm admitting my ignorance on this first part....when hearing a strong grip, initially, i felt in my mind that meant my right hand (I'm right handed golfer) would be in the position that is actually a true weak grip.

I didn't have an overly obnoxious weak grip, but it did tilt just a little more shy of neutral. During my hand positioning, I was hitting my irons fairly crisp, and consistent....however, my drives were probably 60% slices.

After actually learning the difference between strong and weak, i've adjusted and i'm now hitting my driver straighter than ever (slight cut\fade action on accident), but i can't hit the damn irons with any consistency whatsoever.

any advice? can you grip irons with a neutral\weak position, and driver with a strong position? i haven't done that yet, but it dawned on me yesterday that ever since i switched my hands is when my irons have gone to hell.

You can do whatever you want, but I would imagine that every coach in the world would want to teach you 1 grip. They slice with the driver is more likely being caused by something else.

In an ideal world, your grip would be fairly neutral. I’d work on swing path with the driver so that you can hit straight drives from a neutral to weak grip. That’ll be more beneficial long term than manipulating your grip strong.

I just started golfing a few weeks ago, so I'm probably not the one to ask, but on the other hand I could be the perfect one to ask because most of these guys probably forgot how bad they were starting out

I didn't realize it until pouring over countless videos, but my slice on irons was for the most part being caused by a "cupped" left wrist. At the top of my backswing, my wrist was bent upwards. Pause at the top of your backswing and look at how your wrist is positioned. If it's cupped, straighten it out and watch what it does to your club face. Just that subtle wrist movement can go a long way towards getting that club face closed, or it did for me anyway. It still feels weird to me, and I have to consciously think about it because it doesn't feel natural, but I played 9 holes yesterday (granted after about 2 hours practicing on the range) and on the 5 par 3 holes I played I was within 10 feet of the pin on 3 of them off the tee. The other two were good shots, I just wasn't using enough club.

Now if I can figure out how to swing the driver without trying to hit the ball into the next county I may be on my way to being merely a bad golfer and not an obvious noob

Also should note I've practiced with my 9, 7, and 5 hybrid 10x more than any other club in my bag, so I'm more comfortable swinging those. Have to take a break today because my hands are blistered to shite

If your driver is draw-biased or sets up differently from your irons, that could explain the difference in ball flight consistency. Check to make sure your club face is aligned properly at address.

I always had an issue with a slice with my Driver and never really paid much attention to it, I just lined up to the left. A few weeks ago a buddy I played with just had me move the ball to my front foot and the slice is now a pretty fade.

May be something to consider instead of grip changes.

a year ago, when hitting the irons nicely, but slicing the driver like hell, a buddy of mine made that same recommendation, and that day, i drove the hell out of the ball.....long and straight. since then, its been a slice or cut\fade (unintentionally) even with the draw stance and the strong grip......so i'm guessing, its more to do with my right arm extending outwards at some point coming down.

Difference for me is I'm usually guessing with my irons. I play a pretty short course so a drive of 270-280 will usually leave me with no more than 9 iron in on most holes. Anything 7 iron or longer in my hands and I am all over the place.

Make sure you aren't fanning your club in your takeaway. The stronger your left hand, the more likely you are to fan.

I typically grip my irons very strongly, and my woods very weekly. I know that’s not right and I know I have some issue where I am closing my face on my woods at impact. But it’s what works.

Smells like some BS, hope it’s true though

I've got no reason to BS, I don't know any of y'all from Adam. I don't consider it a great feat, we're talking about 95-120 yard straight par 3's. For me that's just "hit the 9 iron straight" (easier said than done on some days)

I am new to golf, but I bet i've hit 700 balls with that 9 iron since I started. You go to the range for 3 hours a day and it shouldn't be surprising that I can luck into a shot like that every now and then.

It's a humbling game. For every shot like that I caught one fat and it went 50 yards, or topped one with the lob wedge and it went screaming past the green. That said, it's still hitting a ball with a stick. I'm capable of doing that fairly well, even great at times, I just can't do it consistently yet.

My hands are blistered. I had to wear moleskin yesterday and didn't even plan on going, but when it was time to leave work I couldn't help myself. I expected 2 hours on the golf course/range per week to practice. In reality I'm logging 15-18 hours per week in the last two weeks. I think it's like anything else, isn't it? The more you practice the better you get? I'm motivated to be better than my shite talking buddies, and I will be. Probably sooner rather than later because I'm out there a lot more than they are despite the head start. They're all bad golfers.

When I start something like this I have a habit of devouring it until i'm mildly proficient at the least. Casting a fly rod took me about a month or practice every day. I have no delusions that this will be that simple, but I'm getting the hang of it. Probably like playing the guitar. After a month you can pick a simple tune. After a year you can play some popular music from the radio. You can play your whole life though and never be as good as Hendrix- but you can still luck up and hit that note once if you try it over and over.
