It seems to vary from season to season and year to year.

Conditions may vary. In no particular order

Tier 1:
Carter Plantation
The Island
Greystone
Santa Maria
Beaver Creek

Tier 2:
Copper Mill
The Bluffs
Pelican Point
Webb Park

Tier 3:
Dumas
LSU
City Park

ETA: What I based my tiers off of: GPS in carts, layout, club house food, average course conditions.

Pelican Point doesn't have a spectacular layout but the conditions tend to be good year round. Your results and opinions may vary.

See Pelican belongs in the top tier during winter if not year round. It’s in better shape than Greystone right now. And it’s not close. They should be swapped.

Sad that zero of the tier one courses are in the Baton Rouge city limits

I think I played there a month or two ago. 2020 for sure.

It wasn't in great shape, and nowhere near where it once was. But it wasn't in unplayable shape for it being winter. Grass was thin in spots but the greens rolled well. Compared to SM and BC, it is in worse condition. But the layout is much better, which is why I'd put it in Tier 1.

There isn't a course in BR that is public, a great layout, and in good shape.

Island and the Bluffs need to go down, Beaver Creek needs to go up.

There is no reason Webb shouldn't be Tier 1. If only LSU would hurry up and close so they would get more rounds there to justify an investment.

You loved the list five minutes ago????

The way I look at it is a mix of conditions and layout. SM and BC have good, not great, layouts and good conditions. Carter is a plus on both, most of the time.

Greystone, The Island and Pelican have worse layouts than SM /BC with the downsides of not actually being in the Parish. The conditions are always pretty good, though. Which is how they get into Tier 2.

Webb is getting better as far as conditions go, but it isn't the same golf course as the ones above it on the list. CM is a pretty good layout but the conditions are atrocious, at least the last time I was there.

The Bluffs is weird and could go in either Tier 1 or 2. The layout is so strong it can't go lower than Tier 2. If it was in pristine shape, it'd be in Tier 1 alone. It is in average shape right now, so it goes in Tier 1 with Carter, SM and BC. If it goes back to where it was a few years ago, it'd be tier 2.

At least that is how I'd rank them and then justification for those rankings.

Yeah you crawfished a little. Bluffs went from “has to” go in tier 1 to “it could go” in 1 or 2. It’s also the furthest away from the city besides Carter yet you only knock Greystone, Island and Pelican for being out of parish. Odd. I don’t think location should play a factor here at all. It’s either in the BR area or it’s not. Conditions, amenities, and layout should be the factors.

Here’s how I would have it right now based on course conditions today.

Tier 1:
Carter
Beaver
SM
Pelican

Tier 2:
Greystone
Island

Tier 3:
Webb
Bluffs
Copper

Tier 4:
LSU
Dumas
City Park
Clark

That's fair. I did crawfish a little. My initial comment was based on current conditioning.

I give Carter and The Bluffs a break for being outside the Parish bc I think Carter gets layout and conditioning right. I think the Bluffs kills the layout side of the argument and survives, at times, the conditioning. Currently, The Bluffs isn't in such bad shape that it falls out of Tier 1.

The Island, Greystone and Pelican are all in good shape every time I've played them, but not where Carter has been the last few years, imo. They also have OK layouts, but nothing as memorable as The Bluffs. I've played each multiple times, and I struggle to find a hole on any of the courses that I can specifically recall or that would make my Top 18 for BR area. Maybe the island green at Pelican.

I'd be fine having a huge Tier 1 because they all rank similarly if you did a composite of location, layout, conditions, amenities, etc.

So strong for Baton Rouge Area. It really isn't this amazing Golf Mecca anymore. Maybe in the 80s and 90s. Even if it got back to primo conditions it wouldn't be a top destination course. If it would then someone would buy it and invest in it.

ETA: The Bluffs has some nostalgia from 80s 90s that people cling to. It isn't what it used to be and now there are tons of courses built since then that are better. It will never be what it was.

I missed the Bluffs somehow in Tier 1. Which leads me to believe you are paid by them or have free rounds there. It is no way Tier 1.
