Flying into Edinburgh Sunday AM, and playing the old and new course next week. Getting pretty pumped about going
Anyone have any suggestions on other courses to play?
Was going to play Carnoustie but they want everyone to hit off mats since the open is there in a month.
Also, any general tips on playing in Scotland?

We stayed at Carnoustie but couldn't play because of a Euro Tour event.
We played at Panmure which was about 10 minutes from Carnoustie. Beautiful course with a rural Scotland feel to it.
We also played at Montrose Golf Links (30 mins from carnoustie) which had two of the coolest holes I've played in my short career
2nd tee box is on a sea side cliff. Fade right and you're in the North Sea
Both were great courses. Panmure was more countryside with sprawling hills, tight fairways and long grass rough
Montrose seemed easier but the wind was brutal being we were right on the edge of the North Sea. Montrose had great vistas of the town.
I loved watching locals stroll down the street, set up at the tee and start their round without checking in at the clubhouse
Take me with you!

be sure to book some time to explore Edinburgh. We loved that city and wished we booked more time there. Lots of great pubs

Never played it, but have been told by multiple people that it is their favorite golf experience. I'd play off the mats, who cares... its only your tee shot. Most times you don't even make impact with the ground on those shots. Play it so you can say you played the Open course within a month of Open conditions.

Carnoustie>>>>St. Andrews. Gleneagles was a really good track as well.

Don't think you're cute or funny by wearing knickers and a sweater and tie... just dress like you would at your normal course. The guys that dress like this are douches and the locals roll their eyes hard at them.

You've played them both?
Why is Carn>>>>>>>>than the old course?

I've never played either one, but many regard Carnoustie as the best of the Open rota courses. However, only one is the home of golf. If I had to pick one I'd probably pick the old course, but as far as just the golf course is concerned Canoustie is pretty much universally regarded as better.

Yes. Old course if not for the birthplace would be a crappy muni track. It doesn’t really have much character and it is short. It has been a long time but gleneagles was better than both to me. Maybe because it was greener, I don’t know. I have been to St. Andrews 3 times but only played it once.
