Does anyone else here remember when they had a beehive at the City Park (BR) Clubhouse? When they had a practice putting green up front surrounded by box woods? When the golf course and the pool was open? When five was a par four?

I started playing there in around 1981 when I was 10-11ish and learning to play from my dad. I remember the pool being there, but it looked like it hadn't been used in a long time and was in disrepair

#9 was a sharp dog leg right, could hit it over the trees and pool (if you could get the ball up quick off the tee) if you wanted to drive the green.

#4 didn't have a pond in the fairway.

#9 was a par 4 at City.
Old front 9 at LSU.
#1, #2, and #9 were par 4's at Clark.
Old Dumas layout.(which they should have left along)
Brairwood trees were not my friend.
Howell park before they reversed the front and back 9. I guess they got tried of me hitting on Winnborne on the first tee.
There were a 9 hole course in Zachary, can't remember the name. Maybe Magnolia something.

I’m fuzzy on Dumas, but my recollection is it was originally nine holes and a back nine was added. The two were different in the construction of the greens.

It had some monster holes on the back which was modtly but through the woods.

I haven’t played there in twenty years. Did they redo it?

I played there as early as the late 60s. Harry Neese was the pro.
The oak trees lined the fairways but they weren’t as big as they are today. It wasn’t as tight. The greens were Bermuda and they were small.
One was an easy 3
Two was a short 4 but the trees could get you.
Three was longer and again trees were trouble with OB left.
Four was a short 4, no water, but the green was on a rise in FYI t of the road. You’d hit down into the bottoms and then back up the slope. A fun hole.
Five was a very tough hole. Par four with a tough tee shot. Too far you were in Dalrymple. Right, trees and water. Left the hole played like a par 5. Second shot had OB left and you had trees along the fairway. The green was really small with two large mounds on it.
Extremely hard four.
Six was anothef good four. The green was elevated on the end of a natural ridge. You hit from the bottoms up yo the shallow green on the ridge. If you missed the green look out.
Seven was another good four, not long but trouble if you hit a bad tee shot from the trees, The green was next to the little creek and it was small. Nice hole coming from the tee high on the ridge back down to the bottoms. Play a draw.
Eight was a killer. Blind par three up a twenty foot hill to a green 210 yards away with a swale in front, Unfair hole really. The green though was a decent size.
Nine was a very short four. Up and fine the natural hills and back up to a nice sized green. There was a pump house on the right and the pool was farther right. The pool was one if those old pools. Probably covered a third of an acre.
You were not to hit over the pool when it was open.
I never played City when the pool was open, They closed it before my time. If you played there with the pool open, you are truly an old timer.
I saw the bees, the old putting green, and as a kid swam in that pool just never played golf there with the pool open.

I really wish they would have kept the original holes but just made it better when they re did the course.

I miss this hole, was absolutely brutal.

9 was a really fun Par 4 hitting into that big dog leg right.

I miss the old layout.

Same here, but the equipment is so good now the course couldn’t keep up. But back in the day it was a good test. Not do much for distance, but becss as use if the hills, the elevations, the oaks and the different style holes.

The clubhouse at Dumas was on Lavay lane where the restroom/maintenance shed is at now next to #4 tee box is. #1 was a par 4 where #13 is now. The front went along Lavay lane then along Hwy. 19 and wraped around back to #9 what is now #3. The back started at what is now #4(was #10) is and ended where #12(was #18) is now.
I like to walk sometimes but now once you start, there is no turn to get something to drink or eat so I have to pack it with me.

I remember #9 being like this and #4 had a ditch in the fairway instead of the pond.

Oh wow thats great.

I really like the layout of Dumas, I still play it from time to time.

Some of the holes are nice with the trees surrounding the greens and whatnot.

#7, #9, #12, #1 are great holes.

Im a fan of Dumas, would be great if they sunk some money into it.

It has a great layout IMO.

Didn’t know they had changed the clubhouse and hole numbers. Are the holes still the same? Old 18 was a great finishing hole. Par 5, high risk big reward. Not very scenic, but an opportunity to make a move or fall apart.

Was the old layout 35-37=72?

Btw, Dumas is slated to be closed.

4 at City

Short par 4. Tee box was north of RR tracks. Your tee shot went down into the bottoms there. The street on the left was high, snd there was a big tree there. Way right was a natural ridge. There was no canal. The fairway was mostly bottom land so to speak. The green was on street level with a rise with a street behind it.

Back then a good drive could reach the green, but it played longer than it measured because your ball landed in the soft bottom and had to roll up hill to get on the green. Big knickers today could certainly drive the green now.

That’s in the mix. They are talking about repurposing all of Greenwood Park.

FWIW the name Dumas wouldn’t stand up to the scrutiny we see today anyway. The course would stay but the name might have to go.

What I was told once that they were looking at a way to combine Clark and Dumas for a 18 hole course with a driving range. Recently I was hitting balls at the Clark driving range and some surveyors were walking thru the woods between the two courses. Would be hard to do with the dog park and tennis courts in between the two courses I think.
