Why did they go to all the trouble and expense only to put the world's crappiest sand in them? That soft fluffy stuff consumes golf balls in the lip, you sink up to your ankles trying get a stance. they really dropped the ball on that one.

That's what most Tour bunkers are like. I don't see the problem.

This is the sand that 9/10 people would prefer to play out of

I'm not sure when they put it there but it compacts over time. It's the softest and fluffiest right after they put it down.

Might include a little attempt at humor, but the fact is, the traps are there to penalize you when you go in them. If they're set up to give you a nice easy shot out, then there is no reason to try and avoid them.

I beg to differ. They rarely have that "Pensacola Beach" soft sand. Most tour stop bunkers are a heavy very granular, course sand. Go turn on your TV right now and look at the sand in the bunkers at Byron Nelson Classic and you will see what I mean. If a ball flies into the lip they roll down the slope and don't bury in the sand. When the players take their stance, you can still see. the soles of their shoes.

I know what you're talking about. Eventually, the sand will compact, dirt will mix in, enough will be hit out, and it will be more manageable. For some perspective to the other posters, the sand at SM leaves no footprint and when you rake, no lines. If any deep bunkers existed, the sand wouldn't stay up at the lips. It's just a little too fine now.

For instance, it can't do this at all:

I want hard packed in fairway bunkers and powder in green side bunkers

I could see that. But I like my green side ones to be a little packed, too. Most balls flying in them are coming from way higher and more likely to pancake and I suck at digging deep with a full swing so close to the green.
