What are you realistically aiming at on long putts, I obviously understand the cup is where the ball needs to be, but what are you focused on or aiming for on longer putts? TIA

I am struggling with putting and looking for any type of advice.

Pick out your line to make it, then just focus on speed. Speed is 100% more critical on long putts

You aim for the hole in the ground and hope for the best.

I have the tendency to over/ under shoot, so yes I should probably focus more on speed. Thanks

I seem to remember bailing you out with my putts during our scramble Saturday

I am realistically aiming at the hole with the understanding that I am most likely going to miss, therefore, I think about a hoola-hoop or 5 gal bucket size hole around the hole as my ending spot. I know I can knock in the second one from inside there. Also, I want to be on the low side of the hole.

If I hit the perfect putt, it goes in, but I will not be 3 putting because I went for a hero shot.

It's all about speed.

Speed gets you to the hole. So speed first then aim. 10 feet short or past isn't going to help your score.

Bring 5 balls to the practice green and put them on a line going away from the hole in 2 foot increments. Do this from around 4 or 5 positions around the hole so you get uphill, downhill, right to left and left to right breaks. Lay the little flag down about 18 inches behind the hole. Focus only on speed. You’ll know the break by the first two putts from each position. Your goal is to make, but decitneily never hit it hard enough to reach the flag behind the hole.

Make this your routine every time you play and you’ll be a great speed putter

I’d also add to try the saw/claw/pencil grip. If your distance consistenticy is your problem, your right wrist is breaking down and releasing inconsistently

This, although I make damn sure my read is good and not rushed. If I nail down the right read, then all I have to do is make sure my speed is correct. This is taking for granted that my stroke is ok. Sometimes I start getting lazy and will start mishitting my puts.

^^This is the correct answer if it’s a breaking putt.

If not, unrealistic on a long putt, the hole. Every putt can be made & every putt can be missed. Think make on every putt regardless of distance.

For some reason,on really long putts, I consistently putt much better looking at the hole/line instead of the ball. It seems my eyes tell me how much of a stroke to make. I can't help but look at the putterhead on those long strokes and it screws me up.

Both are pretty damn important. 10 ft left or right with good speed isn't going to help either

To keep it within 3ft. The thought behind that is, 3ft long is still within 3ft but it definitely has a chance to go in VERSUS trying to drain it and leave it 5ft short because speed is critical (as others have said). SO, I try to keep it within 3 ft.

the hole??

I'm trying to roll it in with dead weight on anything outside 30 feet or so. Inside of that I'm trying to make it and if I miss hopefully about 1 ft by. Inside of 5 feet I'll often hit it with pace to take some break out of it and if I miss it can run 3+ ft. by, but it drastically lowers my miss percentage.

Don't worry about making long ones. Just try and get the distance right.

If you do that, you may bee pleasantly surprised by how many fall in.

As another poster stated, speed is most important.

Pick a spot a few feet from the ball on the line you want, aim for it, then focus on your speed.

Also, be sure to keep your head down through the stroke. See lots of guys on long putts pull up because they're anxious to see where the ball is headed. It usually ends up way short.

Getting it within a 3-foot circle on putts of 25+ feet is a good stroke.
