That entire tournament was awesome and the drop was 100% warranted.

So he took a practice swing where his stance would be and uncovered a sprinkler head. Seems simple to me that the drop was warranted. Great tourney wasn't a huge fan of the course

Whats the limit? How much are you allowed to “uncover” with your practice swings?

I mean he did not notice the sprinkler head until his action of moving grass

It’s the same as the woods rock debacle. At what limit is something considered “immovable”

The one that drives me crazy, though it doesn't happen nearly as often, is when they are allowed to pull an embedded ball out of the lip of a bunker. The rule that left Hovland and Rory get relief in majors last year. The rule is really there for relief if it's plugged from wet ground, their balls were in dry conditions they just hit it so hard into the face that the ball buried. Add to the fact that you don't even have to drop it into the bunker, you could literally drop in the short grass if it's within a club length.

You think they should have to play an imbedded ball?

When a ball sinks into a lake your choice is play it in the lake or take a penalty

Why should the bunker be different when it’s embedded? It should be treated as a penalty to hit in the bunker

Played a round with Ted Scott last year. He chatted a little bit about how to use the rules.
One particular situation had to do with a sprinkler head next to the green. Said players will adjust their club or stance to get impeded by it.
Just part of the game.

No, I think they should have to take a drop for unplayable. I mean Hovland toed a iron straight into the bank. It embedded because it came in extremely hot, not because the ground was too soft/wet, the conditions were perfect.

I'm not in favor of using loopholes in rules to improve your bad shot with no penalty.

I don’t blame the players. I blame nutless rules officials

From a ruling perspective:

If Mac would have been standing on the sprinkler head knowingly pre practice swings im fine with the ruling. But he didn’t. It wasn’t until he adjusted the conditions by his practice swings that he noticed. He himself created the issue of the sprinkler head

From a rules perspective:

When you hit it anywhere besides the green or the fairway, if you get a drop for any reason you should have to recreate your lie (reasonable expectations here just like other rules)
