Very strange series of events. Basically no one knew for sure if there was an issue. I thought for sure those guys were right about no ball being in play.

Twitter link with video.

It was strange because it didn't really impact the shot other than mental. But allowing it would open the door for other things...

That limb 50 yards down the chute that would impact your hard cut around the dogleg? Sure...go pull it down.

You can alter it if its on the tee box from what I understand.

In this case, it was in front of the tee box. Its the same thing as cutting a tree down in the fairway

frickers shouldn't be putting trees in the fairway.

Honestly the course setup should never be such that you worry about tall grass in front of the tee box.

I would not be surprised if Phil orchestrated this penalty as a save face from the open. He had been having some bad publicity for basically cheating and now he looks good for calling a penalty on himself. I wouldn’t put it past him...

Phil's having a rough couple of weeks. Maybe the 10 million he will win from beating Tiger will soothe his nerves.

On number 7 at the Denham Springs CC, there is a tree that is basically in the middle of the fairway just before getting to the green. Unless you hit your second shot way to the right, it comes into play all the time. And then, there are more trees to the right so you can't simply bail. It's just a dumb place for a tree.

Oakbourne has trees blocking greens from the middle of the fairway or trees in the middle of the fairway on half the holes on the back nine (feels that way at least). For such a well kept golf course, that shite makes me hate it.

There are about 4-5 holes at Denham Springs CC where you can hit your drive right in the middle of the fairway, and then, either have it hit a tree branch, or have to contend with a tree on your next shot. This should never happen.

Don't the pros play a course with one smack dab in the middle? Like Harbour Town maybe?

Pebble Beach is probably what your thinking of...but there are plenty of courses where trees either in the fairway or overhang into the player's line:

Pebble, Harbor Town, Augusta, TPC LA, Colonial, Bay Hill, etc.

Nah, I know what you're talking about at Pebble, but I am thinking of a large hardwood in a dogleg left.

Maybe, but it probably has a place to bail out. At the Denham course, sometimes the bailout spot is also covered in trees.

Sounds like a great place for a tree IMO. My home course has the same thing on a par 5 that makes the green, more or less, unreachable in 2 unless you hit an absolutely perfect shot. Strategically placed trees aren't dumb. They are placed where they are sometimes to force you to hit a certain type of shot to make the hole more difficult.
