I didn't follow professional golf that much at this time. Don't really remember how big this story was while it was happening.

But this is a good little documentary on what happened.

That was honestly the first time i cried over someone dying i didn’t know. He was absolutely beloved on tour. That US Open at pinehurst imo is one of the best tournaments of all time.

I met Payne a month before the crash. Many say he wasnt that nice of a person, but he couldn't have been more nice when I met him. He came and played a hole with everyone at a corporate outing at a course I was the pro at. Great guy and such a sad story.

There are some interviews with a pro player and caddie in the documentary.

They all said he was pretty much an arrogant a-hole and then he found faith two years before his death. His wife and kids pushed faith on him and he found it.

People said that life change made him a much better person on and off the course.

I used to visit my grandparents in Orlando and would often go to their church on the outskirts of town. We decided to skip one Sunday and go to one of the parks. When we got back everyone was buzzing talking about how Payne Stewart and Byron Nelson showed up at church that day. I was gutted. This was a small church with about 75 people in the congregation and about half of them were my relatives.

I was at the open at pebble when many of the pros hit one in the ocean at daybreak for him. I saw more grown men tearing up that day than I’ll ever see again. One of the most memorable events I’ve ever seen.

I heard he was bit of a prick but was humble the last few months of life. Makes me think he was an a-hole the whole time.

Def wasn’t the last few months of his life. He was overly competitive and came off as arrogant. Actually extremely similar to a lot of the golfers to this day. He found a spiritual life and became beloved for years on tour. You must be young cause if you remember the entire tour was devastated by his loss and I’ve never seen tributes like that before during a tournament.
