Old irons got stolen, need bang for buck recommendations

My bag with my iron set of Taylormade Burners 1.0 got stolen out of my garage the other day. Had these clubs since I was a youngin in 2009 and they treated me well, but now it's time to move on to some new irons. Those were game improvement irons, but I've recently wanted to move on to player distance clubs (not ready for straight up player irons), but I'm on a college budget and don't want to drop a grand on an iron set.
Anyone have any recommendations for a good set of irons that I could get from the 500-700 dollar range? Is a new set of irons worth it, or should I just go used?
Probably going to go get fitted soon, but I feel like they'll only try to sell me on expensive new clubs when I'm in the store. Any help is appreciated, and I have the golf itch so I want to make a purchase somewhat soon, just don't want to screw myself paying too much.

Your local golf store will have a bunch of used iron sets that people have traded in. They will be a few years older model but still an upgrade from your burner 1.0s. Just find some with similar shafts and lie angle. There’s nothing wrong with game improvement irons especially if you don’t play and practice often. They’ll be much more forgiving.

Try and find some 07 Callaway forged. Big X on the back. Best iron ever made IMO and they should be affordable if you can find a set.

Go used.
I found a used set of Calloway Xhot for $199 at local golf shop. Irons looked like they were played a handful of times.

Just about anything will be an upgrade over those Burners.
Try the Callaway Preowned website.

Want new, look at direct to consumer brands like Sub 70, New level, Ben Hogan, etc.. Just get fitted and send them your measurements. Used, Calloway pre owned.

Callaway Golf Pre-owned they have Callaway and other brands. I bought a set of Mavriks on Black Friday and the only way I could be happier with them is if they made me play like Phil.

Think I’m going to go with some used Callaways realistically. Feel like I trust those more than other lower tier brands of new clubs. The struggle is finding a good set that goes from 2/3 iron to P wedge instead of 4/5 to P wedge

The lofts of most newer irons 4/5 run from around 19° to 24° which is similar to older 2/3 lofts.
