My Indoor Experience up North

For those of you that can golf year-round, count your blessings. This is what I have besides guerrilla golf until April.
It's high 30s here today and no snow on the ground. The itch got to me and decided to visit the local indoor place. The big casino nearby, Turning Stone, has a bi-level indoor driving range and a short game area setup all year round. Here's the indoor setup:

The driving range isn't bad. I was up on the top level because the bottom was full and there was a wait. I'd guess there were 20 stations on each level plus some spots for personal coaching and club fittings There are targets <40, <60, & <80 yards from the hitting area. Anything beyond 100 yards goes into a huge bet. Rates were $12/half hour with unlimited balls. The short game area is big enough for four people with one big putting green and two large chipping areas. There are some artificial bunkers which were weird because it's just different colored artificial grass. There is about a 15 foot decline slope on the backside of the second picture which was surprisingly fun to chip from.

We had a great golf dome outside of Chicago in Buffalo Grove. No golf domes in PA/NJ/NY that I have found.
I spend the majority of my time at Five Iron in the offseason which is great.

Anytime I think about complaining about summer golf here in Houston, I remind myself that I can play in shorts in the winter most days. That looks like a cool place to practice in miserable weather, though.

Or the dark. I can't practice my short game at all during the week, because by the time I leave the office, it's been dark for half an hour. There's no place around here that I can do something like that.

I just hate hitting off of mats or artificial grass especially for short game. Gives me a false sense of confidence. But it is better than nothing I guess.

I’m jealous of that short game area. I live in NYC—5 Iron and Chelsea Piers (though even with heaters it can be cold) scratch the itch when I want to hit some balls, but neither have a great place to practice short game. That touch around the greens is always the toughest thing for me to get back after the winter months.

The short game area challenging, for sure. I don't play on a lot of nice courses but it reminded me of chipping on fast greens. Control was key for trying to keep any ball from rolling off. I wish the bunker area was real sand but I understand this setup is easier to maintain. The driving range side has a real bunker but I think it's only used for lessons and maybe club fittings. Here's another view, shot from the entrance:
I can't find a picture that shows the entire Sportsplex but this will help understand the size. There is an inflatable dome connected to each side of the building. The inflatable in this picture is where the driving range is located.
