Handicaps are confusing. I have always heard that a handicap is not what you are shooting, but what your "playing potential" is. I have a GHIN 8.7 (up from a 7.9). I have posted rounds of 83, 86, 73, 88, 80, 74, 86, and 76. My scoring average is suppose to be an 83. That 73 was my all time best and it should/could have been a 71.

I'm 59, in the worst shape of my life and only play 2-3 times a month. Athletic, but not as much as I used to be. The "potential" is there, but golf is a fickle game for me.

I have pride in my game. I am what I am. I'm honest about my score and play to the rules. That's all I can do.

i'm responding to this because i have a question. i'm pretty new to playing golf consistently. finally joined a club back in march and started playing 3-4 times a week some weeks, but usually at least twice a week.

i use 18 birdies because it keeps my scores, and gives me OK yardage via gps, and i've never had a handicap and its generating one for me.

again, i'm new to golf, so i'm curious as to why it says my handicap is 20, but my average to par is 28.

my score is usually 93 to 98 most days. an occasional round at 102....and, i shot my low the other day at 87.

so is the handicap based on my average scores in reference to the # of rounds i've played at beau chene and including their slope\average? Just trying to figure the difference between the handicap and the average to par.

Think of a handicap is your potential. It’s not supposed to be a true average of your 20 most recent scores. It’s closer to an average of your 5 best scores. I say 5 instead of 8 because most people, especially high handicaps, are not playing a course with the slope at 130 and rating at 72. What that means is that you’re likely playing at a tee box where a scratch golfer will break par more often than not. But I digress.

If you CAN shoot in the low 90s, then you’re a 20. I’m a 1.5 right now and can shoot anywhere from 70 to 85 although most of my scores are in the 75-79 range.

we played a big ryder cup deal for about 10 years (i played in it the last 5).
this being a legit ryder cup tournament. scottish nationals in the O&G industry living in Houston vs Mericans.

2 years ago was the final year and the only year the US won. The scotts stopped because many complained the US team was recruiting too good of golfers to try and win, etc.
but the reason the scotts kept winning, and this is a matter of fact, was due to handicaps.

in my third year i played at a 5. i played against a guy who was a 14, so i was giving up 1 stroke on 9 holes. (well this was a 2v2 best ball match).
They beat us in about 12-13 holes, despite us playing pretty good.
the 14 handicap had 5 birdies and was pretty much unstoppable.
he was truly a nice guy and we hung out that evening at the casino. i asked if he still played much, etc etc. his response was that he used to be a scratch golfer, but hasn't played much at all the past 5 years or so. thus he does not have a current handicap and just turned in a 14.

this is what we faced every year in a nut shell.

2 others times (among many) i played against 20+ handicaps and they always came down to the wire.

in the same breath the year we won there was a 23 handicap that destroyed a team of ours during the best ball and we pretty much considered that year to be lost. i drew him on singles day and won in 14 holes. he was truly terrible. so in this case he really just had one of those days the first day and then played worse than handicap the next day.

handicapping is a problem. but if everyone has a legit one, then it really works.

“It was My best round this year!”

“I just don’t play much.”

“Had some good luck out there today.”

As an 11, I shot 44,43,43,44,41 in our 9 hole matches. Beat my index once. Came within a shot or two for the rest.

Make people turn in their GHIN number. The club can check them out.

I don't think any clubs are checking handicaps for validity.

This is a lot of the problem. I’m amazed at the number of avid golfers who don’t keep a handicap and don’t understand how it works. They honestly think if they usually shoot mid 80s that they are like a 13/14. When I tell them that they are probably no more than a 10 if that they can’t fathom it.

You are right. It usually works out to your average score over par minus 3 depending on course rating and slope. So many think it’s just your average performance.

Beating or meeting your index is a great round. If you do that once in 4 rounds, that’s believable. If you beat it 3 times in a row, index will move down significantly.

I’m not sure why people fudge either way regarding their golf ability. I’ve seen 14s that really were more like 17s and I’ve seen 17s that played 3 times in a row to about 8.

I guess there are always going to be people who think they are “winning” something when they do this. Ultimately, they are cheating themselves.
