Whoever is in charge needs to make a decision, imo. Either they need to close it or maintain it properly. It doesn't have to be pristine, it just needs to be decent and playable.

When I got into golf, circa 2007, that place was always packed. It wasn't in amazing shape, but the fairways were wide and it was a good place to learn golf. The guys that were playing out there weren't expecting SM or BC conditions, but something along the lines of where Webb was a few months ago. You would struggle to get a tee time on the weekend. I'd show up after church on Sundays and there would be 5 groups waiting to go off on 1.

That's a reasonable goal for that course and isn't overly aspirational. It'll never be The Rawls Course. It will never be what Yale was a few years ago (not now). The school doesn't and really shouldn't have any interest in dropping millions in a renovation and continued upkeep. It just needs to have the grass cut regularly, puttable greens, and a range, and the place would probably stay fairly busy. I can say that because that's what it had in 2007-2010 when it was packed.

I don't know what the budget looked like at that time frame, but assuming the numbers worked, that's what they should go after. Otherwise, an uninspiring layout with poor maintenance isn't going to survive. If they can't or won't commit to modest playing conditions, it probably would be financially smart to turn it into a parking lot. I'm pulling for the course because I think it serves a role in the BR golf community.

Yep it isn't bad but with that little budget you cannot expect them to never lose the place. That is one of my "idiotic" points. But, yes if they can keep it decent then it is great. But, I just don't think you can consistently keep it decent charging $14 - $20 a round plus $200k from LSU.

That is one of my points.

That article doesn't really tell me anything definitively. All of the people quoted have an agenda. I remember when all of this was going down, and many of those people wanted it closed no matter what for other uses. That's a fine opinion to have and it has its merits, but I'm also not going to take a lot of their comments at face value.

I won't pretend to know the details but mike Johnson kept the course in pretty good shape. Now he is at Santa Maria and that course is much better.

I remember a lot of hearsay about the powers at lsu wanting the course to fail.

The course was always busy when I was in BR. Olds loved playing it. I have a hard time believing that it was that much of black hole. Hell all they needed to do for money was start selling beer.

Hell it was the best range for people that live around campus too. That alone can be a good money maker

The LSU Powers play U Club which is bankrolled by TAF. No one cares about LSU Golf course that matters. They don't step foot on it.

I'd assume the non-golfing people at lsu see it as a waste of money

Which I disagree with because it was a fabulous place to learn golf

That's the student price. It's like 40 bucks for a non student I believe.

$31.50 right now on golf now for weekend morning. $20 for afternoon.

$22.5 for weekday morning. $17 for weekday afternoon.

This is during prime time season and for public. Students and Seniors pay less. And Seniors will kill a course

I would be my life that the annual average rate they charge is less than $20.

I haven't played it in years, but it was like $16 when I was a student and I thought like $34 for non student. Looks like they haven't raised prices at all or maybe lowered them based on it being a goat ranch now.

Also do those include cart because those would be about right without a cart

I played it about 3 weeks ago for old time's sake as well. The fairways are in good shape. Don't miss them though. Balls are next to impossible to find in the rough. Greens looked awful and were bumpy, but actually putted better than you'd think.

I shot 82 that day, which wasn't bad for the conditions.

That course can make you feel like 98 tiger at Augusta if you bombing drives in the fairway. Especially when the rough was trimmed down.

loved it in college, and worked there for a short while.

i was around from 2002 - 2007. took part of helping to sod the new holes, that was a bitch.

problem with playing is it was always packed on weekends with old dudes to were slow AF.
always enjoyed hearing Mike talk about titties though.

Well, now I know what it’s like to play in US Open rough

This course is unplayable right now, then charging $35 to play that is a crime, holy shite

It really was.

As a student I played the shite out of it and probably hit 10,000 balls out there.

It’s a disgrace where it is now.

It’s odd because I remember last year in April it was in really good shape.

A course bringing in that little revenue will never be consistent. It’ll always have long periods of suck followed by short burst of success where everyone thinks it’s back.

ETA: Always a key employee leaving or piece of equipment breakdown or missed chemical app or irrigation breakdown away from disaster.
