I'm addicted to golf

I'm a 28 year old male.
I started messing around with golf because of a friend around high school so roughly 10 years. Would kind of just go play whenever a few friends would go. Would be months without playing sometimes.
This year has been the year where I just can't stop thinking about it. Investing a lot in equipment (new driver, new putter, new hybrid, new shoes, new wedge). I took my first lesson of my life last week. Every day I'm trying to think when I can go play or hit the range next.
First step is admitting it I guess. Is this normal?

Sounds like my roommate in college. He played soccer I played golf. Every day after practice he'd ask when we going to the range.

Are we identical twins? Add in new shorts, shirts and hats as well as a membership to my local club for me. Along with watching like all majors and most PGA tour events, even the thurs/fri rounds. Ohh and a Birdieball putting green!
This after only just playing the random round getting drunk with buddies in highschool and then not hitting a ball for about 15 years
I did however convince myself not to get fitted for new irons until next spring when I have worked out my swing enough for it to be worth it. Gaming my dads old '86 Wilson Staff tour blades right now.

I wish. I'm in New Orleans and there is 0 reasonable membership options. I wake up on the weekends and immediately get on my golf now app. Sometimes I really think to myself, "Do I have a problem?"

Not sure if TPC LA still does this but they have a quasi- membership where you pay a couple thousand and have discounted rates or just pay a cart fee kind of program.
Membership options are limited but not all entirely out of reach but they might offer more than what you need at this time. I joined one of them knowing I'd grow into it vs paying crazy after 30 initiation fees.

Look into English Turn. They have a junior membership if under 31 which is extremely reasonable. Even their normal membership is very reasonable with low F&D minimums.

You would be well advised to quit playing golf and develop a nice cocaine addiction.
It will be cheaper in the end.

Im really lucky in that. My area has one of the best courses in the greater nashville area that is stupidly reasonable for memberships. In the end I have to play about 30 weekend rounds to save the price of membership. Thats not counting unlimited range balls so no-brainer for me.

Ohh I KNOW I have a problem. But I do this with a whole lot of hobbies. Go hard and burn out in a couple years. I think the Golf bug is going to last though. Ive been wanting to play again for years but just wasnt willing to put in the time required to get good enough to make going out on the course enjoyable. At 38 my ambitions toward "young" mens games are fading, leaving me with more time.

Timberlane has a good deal for golfers under 40.
Posted on 6/26/18 at 2:46 pm to Placebeaux
Timberlane:
$60 a month*
Unlimited golf
30 Buckets of range balls each month
Use of the Swimming Pool (seasonal)
Use of the Fitness Center (Age Requirements)
Use of the Sand Volleyball Courts
Use of the Tennis Courts
Many exciting Social Events
Yea not bad at all. Just 30 minutes from the house in the opposite direction from work. Not very convenient

This is a good point, I think City Park offers something similar. It is not a true membership like at a fully private but a decent option.

Not exactly sure what you're saying here. If you're talking about one of the two fully private clubs, you still have to buy the stock eventually it is just not at one time. Is that what you're saying here that you joined at a younger age to spread out the buy-in or something else?

If you're near Airline TPC Louisiana is really not that far away, might be worth it looking into.
Not even getting into the downstroke, sounds like the dues at MCC would be more than you want to pay.

2000 a year at Southern Oaks for a weekday membership

No, they have tiers you buy into based on age. That is the flat cost. Dues are tiered based on age as well. I think I pay 30% of voting member dues. Once you turn 35 you are vested/voting member.
My point to the OP, don't shy away from a club because of the cost. The benefits are there you just might not use all of them at this point. I hardly do anything out there because of my age, just play golf. I am the age of most of members kids or grandkids.
I'd pick TPC LA over Bayou Oaks primarily due to the driving range. The driving range at the North Course is a complete and utter joke. Only downside, Avondale is in BFE.

Perhaps we are members at different places, but typically you are either paying toward/vesting into a stock holder or you are buying in at a lower price. Or, perhaps we are saying things in different ways.
Rendevoustavern makes a good point regarding a private club, the only advice I will say about it is that if you try to justify the cost by the number of rounds etc it will never make sense financially; it is a luxury. This is certainly a generalization, but for this area at least.
