Is this worth using? I've never taken formal golf lessons of any kind, and probably have horrible mechanics in my swing. I only play a dozen or so times a year, but would like to play more. My irons are 20+ years old(Titleist DCI) and I still use an old Ping driver around the same age. No idea what my handicap is and have never had it measured. I generally shoot in the mid 80's to mid 90's, and most of my problems are just inconsistent ball striking and horrible touch around the greens. I consider myself a good putter, but pitching and chipping are terrible.

Just worried he's going to tinker with my swing to the point of losing all confidence in it. But maybe one one-hour session won't allow him to do that. But I could probably use some tips to achieve more consistent ball striking. My brother says I have a descending swing and said that contributes to me inconsistency. I do take massive divots with my short irons and pull a lot of them left.

I always tell people prepare to get worse before you get better if you are serious about lessons. If that is not you intention just be upfront and tell them you are not planning on moving forward and would just like some advice. You will be amazed on what little things you thought you have been doing right all this time that are completely wrong.

100%, best way, only way to get better.

You have to have another set of eyes to see what you are doing.

what you think you are doing is usually 100% the opposite in reality.

Lessons are a must. Tour pros take lessons every week.

Then just get some advice on these or maybe just chipping. Chipping and swinging are different strokes so if you are already horrible chipping then you cannot get any worse. Plus any advice on chipping shouldn't hinder your regular swing.

True. I do know I don't do a great job lining up my shot, including ball placement in my stance.

If you're only playing once a month with 20 year old clubs and shoot "mid 80-s" I will meet you at sonic right now

Firr real though, if you only have 1 hour lesson and don't plan to continue getting lessons, I would focus on short game. That will give you the quickest way to drop strokes with limited lesson time.

It's more than once a month as I get most of my playing in during the summer months. May through early August is when I play the most. And it's usually by the end of the summer I'm scoring mid-80's at a pretty easy course, so take it with a grain of salt.

I've tried newer irons. I actually have a nice set of Clevelands, but I can't hit them to save my life. There's just a comfort level with the old Titleist irons, and my distance with them is pretty dialed in with them.

If you’ve only got one hour and aren’t going to go more than that ask for that hour to be recorded so you can see your swing and mistakes and what you need to do better. When I first got into golf years ago the thing that helped me most was being able to see my swing from behind and to the side.

I got a lesson for Christmas once. It was awful. And what I mean is, he was trying to break me down the the beginning of my golf swing. I didn’t want to pay for 6-7 lessons that it would take. So it screwed me up so bad that I almost couldn’t play at all. Afterwards I asked him if I would’ve told him that what would he have done, and he said he would’ve given me a few pointers to make the swing I have work better. That was all I wanted but I didn’t know.

I've gotten about 6 lessons so far this year.

Have only been playing for about 3 summers now but was athletic enough to shoot 90-100 right off the bat with a few rounds in the 80s last year when I got lucky. I was doing a bunch of bad things and with those habits its always a matter of time until you nuke your round.

I've shot 86, 83,84,85 and a 38 (9) my last 5 rounds.

Yes, it's worth it.

That's my fear, but sounds like I just need to be specific on what I'm hoping to achieve with just cleaning up a few things in my swing, and time permitting work on chipping and putting.

Lessons do work I've added 30 yards a club in just a month or two by learning the right swing plane. Craziest thing is I knew exactly what I wanted to look like the entire time and could never do it on my own. Two lessons and my plane went from flat and weak to upright and strong. (Not that flat cant work it just wasn't right for me.)
