The Houston Open got what it wanted: a return to the spring on the PGA Tour schedule starting in 2024.

The 72-hole tournament will run March 28-31 at Memorial Park Golf Course. The Astros Golf Foundation, which conducts the Houston Open, has reached an extension that will have the PGA stop at Memorial through 2028.

An official announcement regarding the move from fall to spring, which had been sought by Astros owner Jim Crane, will be made Wednesday at Minute Maid Park. A late March date was coveted because of its proximity to the Masters, which next year will be played April 11-14.

The Houston Open was played the week before the Masters from 2007-2018 (except 2013, when it was two weeks before the Masters) and represented the last chance for competitors to get into the field at Augusta National via a win in Houston.

The Houston Open has been played in the fall since 2019. The November 2022 tournament was won by Tony Finau. In 2020, the Houston Open was played Nov. 5-8, and due to COVID-19, the tournament was again contested one week before the Masters.

Houston is taking Austin’s spot on the PGA Tour schedule, replacing the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event that had been played in late March at Austin Country Club since 2016 but is ending.

The Astros Golf Foundation took over the Houston event from the Houston Golf Association in 2019 and, after one more year at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, moved the tournament to Memorial Park Golf Course.

Is there a better course to host it at? I don’t love GCOH but I think it’s better than memorial.

I love playing Memorial, I like the location, but there is one big issue with Memorial; many of the greens are elevated. I found myself not knowing how close a putt was to going in when I would be at the bottom of a green while watching last year. You basically needed to be in a grandstand or there needed to be an elevated section next to the green like #11.

The reason the players loved playing the GCOH was that it gave them a great prep for Augusta ! I would bet that if they go back to GCOH they would have a world class field because of the venue....Memorial park will not attract a great field and then in San Antonio the next week would be a weak field cuz the Masters players would be headed to Augusta to get settled into the houses and play the course couple times before the tournament week starts

There is 0.0% chance it goes back to GCOH. Memorial was purpose built renovated to host a PGA event and the committee that puts it on isn't going to let it move. Regardless of its comparison to ANGC people will show up to play because of timing.

I always liked when a guy would get his first win in Houston. There was a plane waiting for him. The guys that already qualified aren’t there, so it’s a great opportunity.

I think one guy got the phone call while sitting at his post round press conference. That’s just a really cool experience.

I saw some reports saying it’s going to be a designated event to, but I assume it would’ve said that in this release

The official release from the PGA said more info to come. That would be amazing.

Correct but I saw (will admit I can’t find it right now) the players voted Memorial is their least favorite course on tour currently. I volunteered out there the last two years and the course is just dull. Great place for the public but these are touring professionals.

Barry C- you are wrong...the Houston Open at Memorial Park is not going to be supported by players playing in the Masters with the tournament being held at Memorial Park. Only way is for tournament to be a designated event. Next year the tournament will end on Easter Sunday which means it will not be well attended by spectators...If you think that the Astros Golf Foundation can strong arm the PGA Tour your crazy...the Valero Texas Open always had a policy that they didn't want a date that fell on Easter Sunday which caused then to be moved to a fall schedule and they quickly reversed that line of thinking when it resulted in weak fields 2 yrs in a row. The PGA told Valero you get a spring date.. if it falls on Easter Sunday tough shite. Players are going to better manage their schedules leading up to the majors. Yes next yr they will play Memorial Park after that I'll bet you that they move it back to GCOH!

You are just flat out wrong. I know people that were part of the Astros Golf Foundation that were the reason we got a PGA tournament again. First off the members of GCOH chose not to host again, especially after Shell pulled out. The Golf Foundation raised money specifically to remodel Memorial AND they have a contract through 2028 with the PGA tour to specifically host it at Memorial. Can the players have input whether a tournament is a designated event? Sure, but they can't dictate which course its at and like i said its under contract for at least another 4 years. On top of that, they are making changes to the course based on discussions with the PGA. So maybe do a little bit of research before you make claims that are flat out not going to happen.

ETA: Also the players LOVED Dell Match play and it didn't get renewed for sponsorship reasons

It's two weeks before the Masters next year. Even if it's not a designated event (I would love it to be, but I would be shocked), you will still have a good field. Nobody playing in the Masters is going to choose to take off 2 tournaments prior to the Masters. The Valero field this year was weak. So, that shows many guys prefer not to play the week before. Therefore, I would expect a good field at the HO.

the only thing that Augusta and GCOH share in common was the greens. There is nothing holding memorial back from making the greens fast as hell. It was the timing two weeks before that had players coming more than anything

I will concede that memorial is a bit of a boring track for the PGA but it is close to me and I think it is nice to have the PGA stops at accessible courses for the public from time to time.

it is also nice that the Houston open is actually in Houston, it should be well attended in the spring at Memorial regardless of the field. Having it in the fall against football was a death trap.

I was very surprised during a couple of the No Laying Up pods that they have mentioned how much they like Memorial. They were in favor of it moving into Augusta's spot in the schedule. I don't know enough about golf architecture to understand, but they seem to think it has a good amount of nuance to it.

the Houston Open and Texas Open will not be designated events coming on the heals of the Players and the API! The new format is 2 designated events and then 3 non-designated events which hurts the Valspar, Houston and Valero. The tour don't care that the Astros foundation rebuilt Memorial Park...just ask the city of New Orleans how putting 25 million in city park South course worked out for them....zurich is never going to leave the TPC and if the players don't support the Houston Open and the tournament is doomed to be just another tour stop .

I don't remember exactly which ones. During the post Houston Open pod, Tron talked about liking the course. When they discussed the Match Play getting removed from the schedule in the lead up to that tournament, I think Tron and Soly brought up being in favor of replacing it with Memorial Houston and even having it be a match play tournament because it would set up well for that.
