First of all he’s 3, so any kind of over coaching drill type stuff is not what I want. Golf to him is just fun time to hang with daddy and whack something for awhile and that’s what I want it to be.

His whole life he’s held the club with his left hand below his right and I can’t get him to stop, everyone I’ve ever talked to said it doesn’t matter it’s just good he likes to swing and just let him swing hard who cares about anything else at 3? That’s great advice but I do hope I can get him to fix his hands soon.

I’ve tried to see if he wants to hit lefty, got him a left handed club, swung lefty in my backyard with him, all of that but he doesn’t want to hit lefty, and he’s clearly right handed throwing, writing, everything.

When he hits a baseball he grips the baseball bat with his hands correctly so he knows how to do it. I’m 90% positive he switches his hands in golf because he started hitting balls watching me do it in the backyard when he was 1 and it’s the only way he could lift the club. He’s got clubs that are super lite and not heavy so that’s not the issue anymore.

Anyone got any tips or is it just one of those things that will work itself out as he gets older when/if he wants to play golf?

ETA: I actually made this thread about a year ago when he was 2 trying again

I’d also agree with the people saying not to worry about it. He’s three. If you try to teach him and get on to him for holding it incorrectly, he might just lose interest all together. Not like it’ll be hard to change that once he knows what it going on.

He's freaking 3.

If he's already interested in the game he'll make the adjustments to what works for him when/if that becomes important to him. There are grown adults that can re-learn golfing habits, it's much easier for kids.

at 3 you just want him to be happy smacking it around.

I would not focus on any kind of mechanics right now, just make sure he's having fun.

One of his clubs has exactly that grip.

It doesn’t stop you from grabbing it with your left hand low

Yea I tried that too but he won’t hit the ball left handed, and like I said he swings a tee ball bat, throws, draws, etc right handed.

It’s hard because I’m taking all of y’all’s advice, he’s 3 so don’t worry about it and don’t try to coach him and turn him against playing.

At the same time I want him to learn

3 is too early to worry about grip. I would say let him do what feels natural to him until he is at least 7 or 8 unless it is a total disaster. Most kids are gonna naturally grip the club strong cause it’s easier for them to manipulate it that way. I would let it go until you see major ball curve issues related to face control.

I wouldn’t worry at all about grip now - have him smash water balloons swinging a club - that provides sufficient incentive to learn the best way to smash them and he is more likely to take instruction - that’s my two cents

Thanks for the advice guys I’m going to not worry about it and hope as he starts playing tee ball he will get used to holding the bat left hand low and switch it back for golf.

Roy you have given me that advice before and I did it with him the other day, he loved it what a great idea

If you just keep it fun for him and he stays interested, I think he'll eventually want to be better than you and he'll take it more seriously. He has a lot of time to learn.
