I've never met the fabled ole baws that chip it close and just par you to death like people talk about on here.

There are a bunch of them at the older country clubs. We use to have a group of them at my old club.

We called them the Shade Tree Gang, they always played with their group only every day and always settled up under a huge Oak Tree by the 18th green.

They were some cheap bastards, never would come into the clubhouse to sit down and buy a beer. They all had suspect handicaps and they would slice people up in the member tournaments.

I was paired with an 80+ year-old man when I was 25 or so. This man hit every shot straight as an arrow and not more than 150-160 yards at most. He beat me by 12 strokes and even had an ace on 9 to rub it in, lol. That ball was a worm burner that bounced 10 times before hitting the green and rolling straight into the hole.

Played with my grandfather and he always schooled me. Shot his age every year for the last decade of his life. He was the epitome of that style golfer. Down the middle, one the green or close, chip and a putt or 2 putt every time.

This right here.

My grandfather and his two brothers made up 3/4 of the golf team at the University of Richmond during their school days. His brother won the NY Senior Am at least 4 times later in life.

My grandfather taught me the game; when we played in MB in the 80s, he was automatic from inside 100 yards.

Before he died, he told me the best golf memory he had was watching me compete in a college tournament representing my school. This from a guy who owned the first ace on two different golf courses in the Raleigh area.

that worm burner ball they hit is a pin seeking missle.

Every time.

And then when they get to a water hole they magically get one in the air .

Love the stories! My main takeaway is this: when you get old, you can beat the shite out of younger guys by mastering the 7-wood.

My question: what is the appropriate age to start using a 7-wood on every shot? And I'm not asking for a friend; I'm asking for my own late-40's arse

Played with a Jr one time. We knew he was a stick going in, so me and my buddy, both about 10hcp played our best ball against him in match play. We shot a best ball even on the front and were 3 down at the turn. He closed us out on 15 (we were like -1). I pressed him straight up just my ball as I was playing good for the last 4 holes and i went par par on 16 and 17 and snaked in a 40footer for birdie on 18 to half him. Think he shot 68 and rode his bicycle home with my money in his pocket.

Several PGA tour players use a 7 wood.

Vijay always uses a 7 wood.

The Heavenwood is a great club, 7 wood loft and 4 wood shaft.

If you need to hit a high shot, there is nothing better.

Freddie Couples used a ladies 3 wood for years.

Whatever works for you really.

I'm 32 and carry an Epic Flash Heavenwood as my third wood. It's money when I need a safe shot to find the fairway

I'm intrigued. Which iron would this theoretically replace? I'm hoping you say 5-iron, because that has long been the most under-performing club in my bag.

I have hybrids for 3 and 4 irons, which I am happy with.

I hit my 3 and 5 woods well also. I would MUCH rather hit a wood or a hybrid than a long iron.

Are 7-woods hard to find? Or are they relatively standard? For as long as I've played golf, I'm honestly not well-informed on equipment.

Me and a buddy decided to play with these two older guys at our course one day. We knew them and knew they liked to gamble. They ask us what we wanted to play for. Started out at 5 and 5. Quickly turned into 20 and 20. They beat the pants off of us. My buddy who is a high handicapper was so nervous he couldn’t hit the ball.

Don’t remember the damage but it was a lot. They made a net birdie or true birdie almost every hole.

Not really hard to find, depending on manufacturer. Mine is 20 degrees, which replaced my Apex 4 iron (which was lofted like a traditional 3 iron). The larger club face is more forgiving than a 20 degree 3/4 hybrid

35 or so. Years ago I caddied for a friend at the Alabama Amatuer at Pine Tree CC in Leeds near Birmingham.

My friend could pound the ball back then. Big hitter. He was paired with a man in his late 50s who greeted us thusly, “have you boys ever seen a hangover?” And then he raised His sunglasses and said, “well here he is.”

Blood shot eyes, smoked 2 packs, skinny legs, noodle arms, pasty pink skin.

The next 4 hours he gave us a clinic on getting up and down from everywhere. My friend shot 75. The Hangover shot 69 and only hit maybe 7 greens.
